So I'm merrily going throug the motions another dead PC repair from a callout yesterday, determined from the normal ground up troubleshooting that it was not likely the Power Supply because my test PSU doesn't get the machine going either so it's another dead Gigabyte cheapie motherboard.
Cool beans. Order and fetch spares driving through sweltering hot, as the Zulu's say - sishisa, Durban drenched in sweat with the usual umgeni road traffic when one lane is messed from construction.. Ah eventually hit the cool highway, no hassles there.
Drag the feet into rebuilding the PC, new motherboard and I'm cursing the cheap guage chassis, not seen a backplate bend so much before, the usual techniques go out the window. Motherboard has to be supported at the back to plug anything into it.
Kept the cursing to a minimum, almost there, time to plug into my KVM switch and get the OS happy with the hardware change. Power plugged in, just one more thing to do, switch the power on and...BANG! My heart in my chest. WTF.
Trips the Earth leakage - get the workshop all turned on again. Oooo I hope it's not popped the new motherboard... back to the drawing board, new PSU, switch on and POST beeps, ahhh sign of life, prey the motherboard is ok, but why's it POSTing.. oo eff I forgot to put memory in the damned thing. shew. Stick the original memory in, Dead PC. hmmm Interesting outcome there, shove in a new memory stick, as I mentioned earlier, the usual techniques for this cheap ass chassis are out the window, now to troubleshoot the rest of the components.. Graphics card here we come. Oh fun.
