Bank account number

Hi All

I accidentally entered the wrong ABSA account number (got the last digit wrong ) in an EFT. Has the money been transferred to a different account or are there error detections in place to prevent this type of thing from happening?

How would the bank be aware of you entering in the wrong number? If the number exists that account has the money now, unless you phone the bank and plead your case.

Call our bank asap and ask to reverse. Might still be in the "clearence" phase. Call them on their all hours internet banking line.

I would imagine that the last digit would be an error check and the transfer will eventually fail <--- at least thats how I would have set the system up. Otherwise theres not much you can do besides phoning the bank and convincing them that you are not trying to reverse a payment after receiving the goods from a seller.
I am personally extremely paranoid about this happening and check the bank account number in excess of 10 times before I eventually do the transfer.

The way it was explained to me in Dec is:

if you want it reversed you need to request the bank to reverse it the same day. If you don't ask the same day then you will have to ask them to get in contact with the ''receiver'' & ask for your money back. They can't gaurantee that you get it back as you would have to rely on the good nature of said account owner.
As it's weekend & they are closed still ask them if they can't reverse it on Monday morning.

You can try calling your internet banking helpline & see if they can't help in the meantime , that is if they work on a sunday.

On internet banking I was told the system looks at the number you enter & how much nothing more.

mine sends a sms saying this account number was entered. ok?
pity it does not tell you who the account belongs to.

Hopefully the reciever will send the money back.

There are clauses in your bank contract covering this.

I know this from the other end. Someone accidentally transferred funds into my account and in trying to find out what it was for ect. I found out this:

If money is accidently transfered into your account you may not withdraw it/transfer it. You must contact the bank and notify them of the error.

If you contact the bank, they should be able to reverse the payment. It might take 21 days for them to process the query, but you should get your money back.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm just wondering whether there's a check digit in your SA bank account number or ie. do account numbers simply follow each other as accounts are created for example:

1234567893

Don't all bank account numbers have to correspond with a name that you're you're making a deposit into?

Afaik they only really care about the account no

I would think that there is a check digit just like your ID and credit card numbers have.. but who knows. good luck though

if the account does not exist then the bank lumps it in their suspence acc i was told & that could then take a looooong time to get the money back.

I'm pretty sure the last digit is a check digit, so the transaction would just fail. You don't need to worry.

You could just call the bank to confirm.

Then how come it sometimes happens that monies get "successfully" deposited into the wrong account ?

Hmm why didn't you use always? Cause there is always a chance that the incorrect number entered actually turns out to be valid.. So it can happen sometimes

Because sutek said such erroneous transactions would just fail. Which makes no sense to me, cos, as you said, it may be a valid number of another client.
