Hi gents (and ladies),

I am disputing a charge on my bank account (which I reported the day it happened), but now it is more than 2 months ago and still getting nowhere. The automatic response I received today informed me that it can take up to 45 days and that any claim older than 2 months will not be processed.

I have had a chat with the merchant, and they are now requesting a full 2 months banking statements around the time of the incident. I am not sure if I should disclose my full banking statements with them?

What do you guys think? Time for Hellopeter?

Kind regards,
Roobs

Sorry, some context:

I went to a merchant to buy little over R1k worth of goods. The employee of the merchant told me (while using my cheque card to swipe for it) that the machine has been slow all day and giving issues. The payment failed and he asked me if I could please go to the ATM and withdraw the funds to pay.

I then went to the ATM and paid him in cash the exact amount. I have my receipt to show that I have paid in cash.

Two days later I received an SMS that the cheque card transaction went through and it was deducted from my bank.

I immediately contacted the bank and raised the issue. Now we are two and a half months later.

This is happening a lot... the damn transactions on the card machines are not going through until sometimes, a week later.

I had this with Standard Bank, took them just under a month to resolve what was an obvious error.

Card was declined due to "communications error" twice at Spar. I paid cash (small amount R300 or thereabouts) and a single transaction came off my card as I walked out of the shop.

This has happened to me multiple times. Check that the transaction wasn't reversed, usually if the transaction was not completed it will reverse within 3 to 5 business days. If it was successful, sometimes the store itself will refund you without needing to go to your bank. I've done it with spar, they charged me cash and on card because the card machine was slow. A week later I took my bank statement and cash receipt to them, the manager refunded me and gave me a R 50 voucher for a the error.

This is sadly Standard Bank, I also went through my banking statements and it was unfortunately not reversed.

The merchant's customer services says that they have no record of my card being used for a transaction... even though money was deducted on my banking statements and was never reversed.

Should I give the merchant the full banking statements? I feel hesitant to give that to people.

I read recently Standard Bank are the only bank that recycle bank account numbers... :wtf:

Not sure why the merchant is involved; in my case I reported it to 0860123107 as soon as I got home, I was given a case number and told it would be sorted by the following Monday - it wasn't. When I followed up the case number I was informed it could take up to x business days (can't remember how many days but it was 15+), as I say it was eventually reversed in just under a month.

This definitely sounds like the fabulous work of Standard Bank.

I also got a case number along with a date for 2-3weeks later. The date arrived and they extended by like 3 weeks. That new date arrived and I didn't get any SMS.

Emailed the prestige banking side and nothing happened. Quoted the text and emailed more harshly a week or two later, few days later they responded with the dispute form I should fill in. The form asks when I contacted the merchant and what their response was.. so I contacted the merchant.

This whole process is just terrible.

Roobir, I have found listing problems on HelloPeter website works wonders. I have solved many issues over ten years, by using that website. A posting there gets read by someone else in Standard Bank, who might be able to route the problem in a different direction. Can't promise success, but sometimes it helps if Standard bank can see you struggle.
