I just got a freelance job recently, from a long-distant client. Problem is, he needs to make a deposit and the only payment type he can do is a bank deposit.
I'm a bit paranoid about giving my account number to strangers (learnt the hard way once). Is there any safe way to make a bank deposit to my account?

Set it up via Paypal? would be extra costs involved but rather safe than sorry.
 
Only safe way I know of is if you make the deposit yourself :) Unless you dont trust yourself, then dont :D

All my clients have my account details so they can pay via EFT, don't understand your fears - maybe your "long distance client" is based in Nigeria?
 
You could create all new bank account only for this purpose, which would act as a buffer/proxy. Don't know if there is any other obvious way to protect yourself.
 
If the third party does not have the password and PIN for your account, he cannot even see how much is there, let alone withdraw any of it. You are quite safe.

I have been using on-line banking since 1996 with various banks and have never had one problem
 
What exactly did you learn the hard way about giving your account number to someone?

It's like looking for a way to communicate because you don't like giving your email address to people.

what happened to you before?

This.

Your account number, is like your cell number. Just because they have it, doesn't mean they can start wracking up bills for you.

I once made an online payment to Web Africa. Two days after I got an sms notifying me that I had made a payment to some company known as Tranx. I phoned my bank and they told me to come over to the nearest branch. But it was to late, they couldn't recover the transaction (R350). Luckily it was a small amount though.
Could have been an online fraud, but my point is **** happens. No matter how careful you are it happens. It may not have happened to you, but if it does you will learn the hard way.
Also, if you do make payments online, there is no authentication (no need for PIN, passwords etc). All you need is your acc no and CCV number. All of which are clearly visible on your bank card.

I hear you, making payments online with a credit card can lead to fraud, but giving your bank account number to someone can't. Remember it's not your card number you're giving him, it's your bank account number. He/she can basically only use it to make payments to you, not much more.

To clarify:
When you make payments online you enter your card number, this is used to charge you.

When someone needs to pay you, you give them your account number, which is different from your card number and they can't charge you with it unless you sign a debit order with all of your account details.

If it would make you feel better, a lot of companies have their banking details (including account number) on their websites or printed on their invoices. It's not something you need to keep secret. (Example: http://www.frontosa.co.za/contact_jhb.asp)
 
There was an instance where Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear, gave his bank account number in a blog and someone used it to debit his account to a charity.

In which case you log a case of fraud with the bank and they repay you the money. It's their responsibility to ensure debit orders against your account are authorised by you.

Thanks for the info lad. Will take your word for it. To be honest, I know s.hit about banking.
They could have at least taught it in school (instead of that LO c.rap).

and that's if you making payments, if you give people your account number you don't give them your card number and or PIN number

Clearly - you jumped to conclusions?
 
If you want to be really careful then open a basic type of investment account at a different bank than yours, which just needs R20 or perhaps R50 to open which also allows for you to draw anytime. Those type of accounts doesnt allow any debit orders to take money out of it, only in to it.
Consider your problem solved :)
