bank statements needed for mobile contract?

how is it possible that bank statements, VERY confidential information, is required to get mobile contracts, buy a car etc. not even FICA requires them. this requirement cant be legally enforced - in fact i would say it is a cheek and illegal. a statement from the bank indicating that you have an account with them, maybe indicating the inception date or whatever should be more than enough!
 
It's not a requirement legally at the moment, since some retailers won a court case against the NCR regulations.

BUT it's up to the credit providers still, that want proof that you do not spend all you money on hookers and blow every month and such. They need it to verify our stated monthly expenses as per the affordability assessment done.
