Banks are coining it

Also goes by the names of "crony capitalism" or "corruption" in non-banana-republics. And further entrenched by a carefully constructed regulatory environment designed to look like it helps the poor while actually further protecting the market from competition. In South Africa's next life I hope it tries a free market approach.
Unfortunately this type of thing is common in many allegedly free market economies.

and I get charged an annual card fee. This then pushes the amount owing on straight over my limit.
And the bank whacks me R165 "over limit fee".
Don't stand for that nonsense. Make a lot of noise and if they won't budge give the ombudsman a go.

The fee should not even be charged to the card in the first place, but I'm sure they do it because they know it will have above effect on many people.

In the UK we did get hit with massive fees when our account payment arrived a day late. We managed to get it refunded by making a huge fuss.
