Thanks

Go to MUSTEK in Midrand and check out their offerings. Will it be walk and scan or a stationary point for scans? More details please...

I realise you probably need a ruggedized device, it would have been nice to use an Android phone and QR code app.

I picked up the KS-380SR-USB-B hand held laser scanner from Esquire a week ago @ R499 excl for a short term rental. It's performed without problem and seems pretty sturdy.

I've been thinking for a while now that an asset tracking application on Android would be awesome. Scan, GPS coordinates and internet access all rolled into a convenient little hand-held device.

Exactly, but maybe wifi with the option of fallback to HSPA.

Those Moto barcode scanners that megrain linked to, support 2D scanning and Bluetooth (not sure if it's the 100m range Bluetooth). Maybe that 2D means they understand QR code images which would allow for the possible future use of Android phone apps (when battery life improves).

I'll find out on Monday what we used at the factory - rugged little bastards, they store somewhere around 300 odd records (IIRC) and then are docked, clearing the records. We printed our own barcodes (like you probably do) and then processed them with either their software or inhouse stuff.

Heya, no reply to my email yet. Will phone tomorrow if no reply.

Motorola - MC9090
Griffin - Datalogic M230

Check 'em out - they're rugged and pretty cool. The Motorola are pretty smart (like a PDA with a scanner) and these are all used for scanning pallet barcodes and so on. Inside, outside etc. You can't go wrong with Datalogic.

There's one coming

Actually I met a guy on another forum that thinks they same thing and is working on developing an app for Android for it. He was testing the waters to see how interested people are. If we just bid our time, sometime in the near future there will be an app.

But in the meantime while we're still using ruggedized handhelds for our asset tracking, I've found great software with a flexible company that has been great. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, CG4 Solutions, but I really like their custom work. They'll tailor their software for your situation, working whatever handhelds you had previously, or they will help you select new handhelds that best fit your situation. I think they are partial to the Motorolla handhelds.

We currently use an application called forcelink (forcelink.net) for asset tracking and work management using phones as scanners etc. Works brilliantly tbh!
