The priestess brandished a dagger, the couple's hands were tied together with a ribbon - and for the first time it was all legal.

In a garden in Roosevelt Park on Thursday night, JJ Jacobs and Michele Roux became possibly the first couple in Joburg to be legally married in a Wicca handfasting ceremony.

Presiding over the ceremony was high priestess Sandra Shirlow and the high priest Glen Muller, or to use their Wicca names, Tora and Shadow Dancer.

And why this was now legal was that recently Muller had become a marriage officer and only last week received the necessary documents from home affairs to perform his new civil duty.

Then it was JJ and Michele who decided, only on Tuesday, they wanted to get married.

It was a rush to get everything ready and Muller admitted before the ceremony that he was a little nervous.

He had done handfasting ceremonies before but never one where he would legally pronounce the bride and groom man and wife.

"I just want to make sure that I get all the words right," he said before proceedings.

Wicca is a religion that is based on pagan beliefs, some of which go back thousands of years.

Thursday's ritual began with Tora creating a sacred circle in the garden, waving an Athami ceremonial knife around like a wand.

Bride and groom, priest and priestess were bare-footed and all were wearing black.

Tora and Shadow Dancer then evoked the Earth Mother and Father Sky, the dual deities that Wiccans worship.

Both Michele's and JJ hands were tied together with a ribbon, symbolising their union.

The only part of the ceremony recognisable to other weddings was when Muller uttered the words, "Do you Michele declare that as far you know there is no lawful impediment to your proposed marriage with JJ here present?"

That was the part that made it legal in the eyes of the state.

Then there was the "I do" and the long kiss at the end.

"It is about us doing something romantic and we wanted something special and personal," said JJ.

Shirlow said: "We have been fighting to become recognised for 14 years. People were not open."

In the past pagan weddings included group orgies (group sex) during and after the ceremonies.
I have a few European films about that :). HOT! :)

If you have a film, it is probably a prawn movie with their interpretation of a pagan wedding ;) :D

Its not a prawn movie, its a historical folk tale. The pagan wedding was just a small part of the movie. They did use naked extras though for that scene :).

Those pagans sure knew how to party ...

I'm sure the naked part is optional. At least I couldn't find any reference to suggest that it is part of the ritual.

In those days fertility was central to everything. The simple man only thought of food and sex, so they celebrated by gorging on food, dancing naked and doing the nasty with numerous partners.
