Hi all,

I need a basic PC to replace my current 6 year old single core sempron. I really enjoy using AMD and I see they're also cheaper. I see I can put a dual core, mobo, RAM and box at PCInt for like +-2000.
What u guys think of this? Remember, I want something for as big bang for buck as possible....

What do you want to do with the PC? What tasks and applications will it be running?

That will determine a fair amount of the hardware you wish to put inside the rig.

I would take those.

its basically doing home stuff, some word, downloads, watching the odd HD movie. I see it has onboard HD capability.

its really a budget home PC

I see theres a 300 price difference between the processors one has 7MB L2 cache and the other 2MB L2 cache, does it make that much difference?

Go with amd 250 very good cpu, 1k for a cpu seems overkill for what you want to do in my opinion. Spend the savings on more memory in my opinion. a 2mb and 7mb cache should not make a difference for what you want to do.

cool thanx guys, yeah, its 2MB cache on the one chip and 7MB cache on the other chip 300 bux more though, but 'ponder' says it makes a big difference? Better check the ol google

if you really want bang for your buck, put a firecracker in your wallet.

It depends what you want to do man, for basic stuff like borwsing, watching moves etc you are wasting your money.

If you game or use applications that max out your cpu then spend the extra money.

Why don't you have a look at the Athlon II X4 620? It's a little bit more expensive than the Phenom II X2 but you get double the cores. No L3 cache though... Looking to use it in my new build, similar to your needs too.

To me ponder it does not look worth spending the extra cash to watch movies, download and surf the net dude.

would love a quad core, but its probably a little bit of an overkill for this application, just really some basic home computing, nothing serious, but yeah the x4 is only 600 more...hmmmm

Well if you have 300 bucks to spare man then do it.

It is not like it is a total waste of cash just not necessary if you looking to save a couple bucks here and there :D.

Dude seriously buying a quadcore for what you want to do is nuts haha but maybe one day you will want the pc for gaming or something heavier so making the investment now might save you some cash in the long run i guess.

well, i'm just looking over the other cheaper boards and another option is going low end board +- 450 and get a 1GB x16 card for 500-700.

Trying to see if I can skin the cat another way/...

G41RQ Intel Essential Series, Raisin City, Intel G41, LGA775, FSB1333, 2xDual DDR2 800, 1xPCI-x16, On Board VGA GMA X4500, 2xPCI, 4xSATAII, 1xATA100, Gbe Lan, 6ch-Sound, Max 12xUSB, microATX R 519 excl. R 591 incl. You don't seem keen on overclocking so this board should be sweet.

Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33Ghz (1333FSB 4MB) R 1,150 excl. R 1,311 incl.

HD 4650 512MB DDR2 VGA +DVI-I + TVO R 549 excl. R 625 incl.

This would be an awesome pc for what you looking for you could drop the cpu to a 7400 intel.
