Basic Questions : Thinking of getting DSTV for my hubby

So, planning to get DSTV installed for my hubby , and yes I'll pay the monthly fee as well.

I went to DSTV website and basically found out that I need these (correct me if I missed out anything).

1) HD PVR 2P R1499.00 (Can i get this somewhere else with a better price, is there anything I must look out for it to be compatible with DSTV?)
2) Premium Package R559.00
3) Installation (WOuld like to do own installation, any website to recommend step by step)

So what else do I need? Or any questions I should ask before I proceed?

Apologize for these newbie questions :erm:

1 - so far R1499 is the rrp it might go on special at diferent stores but no idea where or when - other decoders unfortunatly (legaly) no - as multichoice doesnt allo
2 - Premium is R559 plus R65 PVR acess fee if you want to use the PVR features (recording etc) or if you want xtraview rember its on R65 whethere you have one or both (i.e pvr and extraview)
3 - :) DIY is dificult but not imposible cost wise you loking at about R500 LNB + R300/400 Dish and cabling and ancilieries about +/-R100 the dificulty is position the dis and lnb skew, from line of site if your neighbours have a dish try and point the dish in the same dirction a cheap sat finder will be about R300 and settin the LNB skew should be at 4 o clock

if you can get a special that includes instalation take it
 
DIY is not for you unless you're really technically oriented and can either take a TV and decoder onto your roof or can buy/borrow a satfinder (can be very expensive to buy).

You can get the entire thing here for R2.5k (including decoder, all other hardware and installation). So you paying R1k for dish, LNB, cabling and installation. You'll probably also get a much better signal than any DIY job would give you (unless you have previous experience with self-installs). Personally I've used this company and was very impressed, just check that an 80cm dish is sufficient for HD, sort of remember Multichoice recommending 90cm minimum.

Thanks for telling me about R65 PVR fee, didn't knwo that :D

Thanks, will call them up. Question : Are there different types of dish besides the size difference?
 
I hope your husband is a sports fanatic... because R559.00 a month is a lot of money to pay every month for so many repeats and such poor service! :rolleyes:

1131 + dish + single lnb + installation - Makro - R599

Then make an arrangement with the installer to put in a dual lnb instead of the single, and pay him the difference. He'll also charge for a second length of cabling.

Then get a 2x4 Multiswitch and wire everything yourself. Check dstv forum for install info.

Edit : Take what Garyvdh said seriously. If he's no sport fanatic, might as well get him uncapped dsl

Once the install is complete, you'll have 2 viewing environments. And will be able to record a 3rd channel.

Lol he is technically still a fiance , i'll probably regret it after we got married and he's stuck in front of the TV? Lol

Woah.. sorry need to slow down here. What's 1131? and what is LNB ? Low noise something?

1131 is a standard dstv decoder you can link the standard decoder to the hd pvr so you can watch 2 chanels at once (xtraview) the lnb is the low noise blocker you will need a twin if you want to use the hdpvr for recording as well or if you want xtraview

1131 is the small standard DSTV decoder you can buy. LNB is the bit at the end of point on the satellite that receives the signal.

The installation including the 1131 will only have a standard one included, for the PVR to be able to watch 2 channels and record another you'll need a dual-LNB.

A 80cm dish is sufficient, since 95% of the "voucher installations" only includes a 60cm dish, which in most cases turns out to be a 55cm!

P.s. Multichoice HD installation vouchers specify a 80cm dish. Too big generally causes problems with wind i.e. alignment and/or physical damage.

Carefully read the warnings on this page very careful and then decide.

I think this will elevate you to wife status pronto. Awesome gift if he enjoys sport. Although if he does not download everything it is 100000000x better than sabc and etv :D.

Are you sure you want get the hd version though? Perhaps put that money towards a nice big screen for now :D. Then when he marries you get him hd as a present. It will remove any worries he may have of his impending doom :p

Does the 1499 decoder include the hd installation? I heard that is somewhere around 1.5k

We got a HD Samsung LED 40 inch end of last year. We could not watch anythign nice on it, except movies that we downloaded. He loves sports and discovery.. and we kind of should have it for our house, it really sucks when you can't watch a Rugby final, etc from home..

By the way all you smart people, do I need 1131 if I only have 1 TV? We only have that 40 inch Samsung LED at home, the other one is an old Box TV... I want HD but not Extraview (unless I pay the same price for Extraview , then I don't mind having them on the Box TV. lol.

You can have HD without xtraview. But it also means you can't use PVR functions even though you have the decoder. PVR activation allows xtraview for no other charge. So it's PVR+xtraview = only 1xR65.
