My boss wants to keep track of our company vehicle to ensure our driver is not stuffing around during the day and has tasked me with finding a solution.

He wants a device that will allow him to see the location of the vehicle at any time (i.e. when he thinks the driver is somewhere he shouldn't be) and does not want any vehicle recovery/SOS type service.

He literally described seeing such a device "in the movies" and has rejected all the usual subscription based tracking companies I suggested.

From what I understand there will be no way around having some sort of ongoing costs as we will need a SIM card to receive the tracking data and send commands to the device. Hopefully I can get this through to him.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a reliable standalone tracker? Most of the ones I've found online require a subscription to their cloud service or are unknown Chinese devices with little info.

Considered that... BUT it's his personal device and he refuses to even use it to navigate to places so I don't think that will work.
You can force him to carry an emergency work phone with him for safety reasons. Legally you are responsible for his physical well being blah blah blah. ;)

Think this would be the cheapest option, I'm sure an entry level android smartphone will do the trick.

OP, I would suggest ctrack secure, I've set it up to send me an sms every time there is activity on my vehicle.

You can grab a GSM tracker off of AliExpress/eBay betc which will sms coordinates to you.. some can relay data over the internet as well..

Hi, I think I can help you with this. No ongoing costs, once off payment and live reporting interval of 30 seconds, geozoning, engine cut via geozones and speed.

Provide a cheap company phone that stays with the vehicle that you manage remotely.

Well... Since this thread has been necro'd it would be rude not to provide an update.

After much indecisiveness the vehicle in question was eventually stolen before a decision was made. After learning that lesson the hard way the replacement vehicle is now fitted with a subscription based tracking service with all the bells and whistles.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone.
