Basic Website design + Monetizing it

Thumbs up for wanting to get something going.

But in all honestly, if you don't have a plan and you're just slapping something together to ultimately host adverts, I don't know how you can expect to get any useful traffic there (read "make money").

In my opinion, it would be more useful (to yourself and others) to:

- Come up with a great idea
- Research
- Implement
- Monetize

I wouldn't expect others to browse my own websites if I saw no reason to browse them myself.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
Think I will definitely look at this Wordpress option a go.

I just need some final advise & tips though.

So I registered the domain.co.za name last month. I paid for a 3 year lease to it.
I now need to understand how I will be able to link my site eg. www.mysite.co.za to the wordpress platform?
Also, more importantly, can I monetize through these platforms.
I would like to banner ads on the site ,do services like Wordpress etc allow for this?
Do they also allow the .co.za domain to link to them?

So yeah, the difficulty I'm having is understanding the linking between the domain i bought (.co.za) to one of these platforms.

If I go to Wordpress now, should I be able to pay for a slick theme and then just update accordingly/weekly etc?

I know I sound completely nooby here, but I honestly am ! :/

Depending on which company you are hosting your website with, most ISP's provide an option to install wordpress via cpanel dashboard, from the installed wordpress you can install theme.

If you still need more info please drop me a pm.

Not sure if this will help you, but this is normally the process that I go through when setting up WP sites for Clients.
In simple terms.
From start

-Register Domain with the provider.
-You will/should get Cpanel login Details
-Login to Cpanel
-Install wordpress from the blogs at the bottom, normally should be there
- Scroll to th php/database options
- You should see Wizard
- With wordpress, a database needs to be setup
- Run through the wizard, Make a note of the username, password and name of the database. The last step of the wizard should be asking what permissions, with tick boxes next to them (I stand corrected)
- Make sure they all ticked.
- Now your DB is somewhat setup
- Navigate to your website URL, you should be at the worpress configuration screen.
- Enter the DB and user details that you just setup
- It will try and communicate with the database
- Once successful, you will get to a screen with the site name, etc.
Bobs your uncle.

For wordpress, there's alot of functionality, and you don't have to buy themes if you know some coding. There are also theme generators like artiseer which can be used to customize themes.
Hope this helps with the initial install.

Play around with it, see if you like it, if not, you can always remove it.

If you need further assistance, I'm by no means a guru but drop me a PM and I will try and assist where possible.
Always good to see people wanting to do things for themselves.

Cheers
K

Hi...

I just set up a WP site without a DB. What would be the purpose of having one ? Not an OT as I'm sure this will help the OP.

Your wordpress site will not work because all your tables, your posts, and additional information is stored in the db.

Ah, I had a look at my cpanel. It seems a database was automatically set up for me.
