Hi, if I plug in my Hp laptop(with or without the batery) My charging light(orange) flashes a few times then goes off, it doesnt charge at all. I dont think it is the battery because it does exactly the same if I take out the battery and try run on ac power by itself.(and it cant turn on even with the cable plugged in) I've tried different power cables etc so The only other option I can think of is the charging circuit.

Any help would be apreciated. Is my diagnosis correct? I've never fixed a charging circuit before. any help?

Thanks guys. appreciate it.:p

remove power plug from laptop. see on the power supply what the output voltage should be, then take a volt meter and test. If ok problem on laptop or even the laptop battery could drain the supply.
So if not ok, its most of the time one off the caps that goes on the supply. [or diode]

The caps are a bit smaller than normal ones, with a higher temp rating.
If lucky you will see a cap that leaked or a bit bumpy.

to open the supply.
Remove power cord. take carpet knife and with a small hammer wetch / pearce the joint open starting at the corners.
Be careful.

Stupid HP chargers. Have a look at the strain relief on the cable coming out of the charger and going to the notebook. You'll probably find you can wiggle it a bit or move it in or out a bit. People tend to wind the cable around the charger too tight when packing it away and just looks like it adds too much strain to that little section.

Time for a new charger. Should be about R400 or so or if under warranty it should be replaced for free. Or get one of the universal notebook AC adapters that have been advertised here.

Hi, Like I said in my origanal message, I've tried different cables. we have 3 hp laptopsat home. I've tried all of thier chargers. And the same thing happens(with or without the battery in) the orange light flashes a few times then goes off.

Most weird. Tried discharging the entire system? Battery out, power out, then hold down the power button for some time to discharge the caps.

Otherwise, I can only think it'll need to head off for repairs.

I do however also recall that there were some issues with the power management and charge stuff if you were running Vista. Read up on that when trying to figure out the same issue on my wife's PC. Ofcourse, only is an issue if you are in Vista. :)

I had a similar thing on my old Acer laptop - light came on for a few seconds, then went off. I tried a new generic battery and the same thing. Then tried a new charger, same.

I eventually diagnosed that is was the DC power jack that's soldered to the mainboard (where you plug in the power supply jack to the laptop - I ordered a replacement from the UK on eBay, removed the old one carefully, re-soldered the new one - did the trick and is still working.

It's a bit of a bugger to get to, as you have to strip the whole laptop - if out of warranty and you are confident enough to strip it, have a look and see if the DC power jack on the board is burnt at all - mine had charred marks around it where it conencts to the board, and every time I plugged in the power, it arced...

thanks well ive soldered alot of power jacks before so I'm good with it now. Lol. thanks man
