I am rewiring my setup with shorter cables, but while I am at the shop, I might as well get the correct colours.

Of course positive to positive and negative to negative are easy, (red and black).

But what colour should I use when going positive to negative?

From what I have seen online it looks like red... But I am not certain.

What do professionals use when connecting a system?

Use black and colour code it with the right coloured sleeve at each end, most installations I have seen its either black, blue or any other neutral colour like Grey.

I personally respect the live colour and would never use it for any other thing than to show positive polarity. It probably makes no difference so some might even use the red colour.
