Battery Solution for Estate Gate during load-shedding

Hi everyone,

As per title, we've gone through 3 batteries in the last 6 months trying to sort the gate to last during load shedding.
Need a decently affordable solution that can work for a complex. My thought was a Mecer jobbie that will remain in the guard house with a lithium battery.

Anyone else dealt this before?
 
What battery do you have installed in the gate motor to begin with?

Have you moved from a standard lead acid gate motor battery to a lithium one? A lithium battery should be able to handle more discharges. That might be your first option to try?

Pretty much this. Lead acid batteries die very quickly.
 
Two things:

- if the gate is not very busy during loadshedding, upgrading to lithium is probably the go to option..

- if the gate is very busy during loadshedding and there is a plug in the guardhouse, running the gate motor from a 100Ah lithium battery based inverter is the better approach..

It’s very busy, therein lies the problem. People coming in all hours of the night (young people complex) and getting tired of being called to put the gate on manual

Plug gate motor/s into this.

 
Done this exercise for 50 odd gate motor installations for apartment buildings

Components:

8 x 7.0 a/h drop-in replacement li-ion batteries (wired in parallel)
14,4 volt 10 amp lithium battery charger
Suitable outdoor watertight enclosure, leaving adequate space for cooling
2.5 mm stranded cable to motor voltage input, glands, etc

If you are going to disconnect AC from the motor controller, disable AC loss sensing

A very busy apartment building that has over 50 opening and closing operations an hour has operated 100% since May 2021 when this unit was fitted

Fit as close to the motor as possible
