A free online FPS in the spirit of the Battelfield franchise
Electronic Arts has begun experimenting with the (unsurprisingly!) popular “free-to-play” model for online gaming. Lately, there has been considerable growth in such games (we’ve previously reviewed a number of free-to-play online games, in a variety of genres), and Internet connections are becoming fast enough to easily support action games (for another example, check out Quake Live – though you’ll probably be unable to play it locally, due to high latencies).
Battlefield Heroes reprises the Battlefield franchise’s style and game mechanics. As with the previous boxed products, you assume the role of a soldier in a war (you can choose from three available classes – soldier, gunner, and commando, each with their own strengths and weaknesses), and you play in large objective based battles – control the most strategic points (flags) for as long as possible.
Where this one differs is, firstly, that you play in the third person, not the first, and secondly, in its artistic direction: Heroes has a cartoon-like style, which encompasses both the graphics and the sound. This lends it a very ‘fun’ feel. During matches, you earn experience points, which you can use between games to upgrade your character.
In order to play, you need to visit www.battlefieldheroes.com and create an account. After that, you will need to download over 400MB – you have been warned! While it is ‘free to play’, here in South Africa, it does involve something of a bandwidth investment.) Overall, this game is great fun to play, and quite humorous to boot.
