Yup, free as in you can download the demo and then you have to play the game till 4lvl in PVE and 10lvl PVP to unlock the rest of the features.
Super cool game, but watch out on the update's I think they are sitting at around 600MB

According to the BattleForge site, the Play4Free is not the demo version:

In the demo version you could only play a small number of maps. On top of that you could not buy more cards or trade cards with other BattleForge players. These restrictions have been removed and the BattleForge Play4Free replaces the demo version
