Now at the top of my home screen it displays a red triangle outline followed by Vodacom-SA - Cell C. If I understand the quick start guide correctly a black filled triangle means that roaming is active - what does the red triangle outline mean?

The word edge which was usually in uppercase is now in lowercase. According to the answer of "Kosmik": " if edge is in lowercase then no, upper case then yes." to my question: "How do I know when BIS is activated", does it now mean that if I try to browse the net or send email while edge is in lowercase, I'm going to be billed for data usage?

The red triangle means you're capped and that money will be deducted from your account.

Capped? That's impossible, I've had the device for 4 days, but I have not set up and email account, browsed the web or did anything else data related. I have only made a few calls and sent 2 SMS messages.

The red triangle simply means that you are 'roaming' by using Vodacom instead of Cell C.

When roaming on Vodacom with a Cell C SIM you will only be offered EDGE and not 3G service.

You will be billed for data, should you use any if you are not connected to BIS or BES.

Try rebooting the handset (technical talk for whipping the battery out and re-inserting) and if this doesn't work the go to Options (spanner) and then Advanced Options and scroll to Host Routing Table and select. Now press the Blackberry key and chose Register Now. If still no joy, contact Cell C.

Here's a short guide:

EDGE: Can use the phone, send and receive email, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser with a high-speed data connection.

GPRS: Can use the phone, send and receive emails, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser.

edge/gprs/GSM: Can use the phone, send and receive SMS texts and MMS messages.

SOS: Only emergency calls (dialing '112' will connect you to any existing carrier coverage to complete the call if you're outside your own carrier's coverage area).
