Sup gaise.

I'm debating getting a BB later this year but I have some questions.

I have crap eyes, so font size is an issue for me. I'm looking at the 9800 Torch, and the only experience I've had with BB is a few mins with my wife's old BB she got from work - but I'm not sure which one.

I see you can set the font size to SUPER HUGE which is cool, though I don't need them that large.

What I do want to know is.

Can I theme the phone to have white on black text?
Does the font sizes apply to other areas of the phone like the Facebook app, Gmail/Gtalk etc; ?
Does it apply to calendar and contacts?

I can live without white on black but I must have a good font size for things that require a lot of reading.

I'm going to try phone around to see if there's a live phone I can fondle here in KZN. I hate choosing new phones.

Hi

On the 9800 you can go to accessibility and change colour contrast to Reverse Contrast. That will give you White text on Black.

Only drawback is that it changes everything. Even pictures are in reverse contrast.

Well it's something I guess - do you know if there's a way to set a hotkey or something to do it on demand? ie: If I'm reading something and I quickly want to change without having tap through a series of menus?

Doesn't look like it but on the Torch it is very fast.

Sounds good, I'll try get my hands on one to test.. looks like a contract for the Torch 9800 will break the bank tho :P

Piesang, what's the quality of your Torch's screen like? I've read the contract is quite sucky and there's colour bleeding.

The screen resolution is the same as the 9700 (in portrait), but its a larger physically, so the images are less sharp. Compared to other phones in the same class its bottom of the range. Colors could also be more vibrant.

The responsiveness of the OS is in question lately, as even with the latest firmware build there are glitches. Its nowhere near as smooth and responsive as its Android and iOS cousins. I have mentioned before that it seems smoother on a 9700 than on the 9800.

The hardware is great. Some 9800 phones have a tendency to get a tad confused at times, resulting in the screen not activating when sliding up. Battery pull usually solves this.

Something I noticed over the weekend is that both the 9800 and 9700 are rubbish at maintaining a call when changing bands. IE, going from a 3g area to edge. I was driving over the weekend and every time the signal changed over the call dropped.

Another point of concern on both my 9700 and 9800 (both on OS6) is the number of times the web browser crashes with "out of memory" issues. This happens several times a day. Many of my colleagues and friends have adopted a routine of doing a battery pull every morning, and then again at lunch time. This applies to both 9700 and 9800 owners alike.

I can not help but wonder how much longer BIS is going to be able to pull customers to the Blackberry ranks. Since Playbook was unveiled it has become the begin all and end all over at RIM. Sure, the future phones that were leaked last week look promising in the specs department, but at the moment the hardware is archaic and slow. I for one am hoping for the best, but despite my cautious optimism about future models I am keeping one eye on the alternatives in the Android world.

I was reading through your post twice. Almost a third time. I have a 9800 and my brother have a 9700. Not one of us have got any of the above issues.

I can't remember when I last did a battery pull. I've never had a low memory problem with the browser. Yes, the screen quality is not the best if you compare it with a Nokia N8 but there is also nothing wrong with it. Not once did look at a picture, video or anything else on the phone thinking that the quality could've been better.

You get mobile phone users then you get guys that put a phone through all its paces trying to crash it.

I'm a mobile phone user and I'm happy with the Torch and N8. I'll never touch a iPhone again and the only time I will use Android is if Nokia starts shipping their phones with it.

Ja, the only time I ever got out of memory issues was when I had too much games installed on it (and I never really used it). Maybe the people who are getting these problems are trying to do too much, if I can put it like that.

I played with my wife's oldish BB last night, oldish one from 2007 or so, must say the keypad is going to take some time getting used to.

Ditto. I've had a 9700 (OS 5 and 6) and a 9800. No problems like that. I do believe RIM should have made the screen resolution higher, but it's still higher than the iPhone 3, and it's more than adequate for my needs.
