Hey guys maybe post your BB pin here and lets share ideas, tips and tricks OTA since this feature is free on the BB service. Mine is
2139E1AE :D

No thanks, would you volunteer up your telephone number or personal email address?

One flaw with the system is that you cant change your PIN without buying a new phone. Also you cant block messages on a case by case basis*.

*EDIT - you can block PIN messages en masse and allow specific ones.

You cant the change our pin but you block a person if you want to and also reject request and not allow future request. And yes you can block messages if you want to. On os 5.0.0.x if you go to options -> security -> firewall, it gives you options to block by incoming messages and you can specify the address for which you want to block the messages and it is not just for pin but also sms, mms, email

I'm not on OS 5 regrettably.

Besides - why go through the schlep - why not share a disposable gmail address that can be blocked at will.

Upgrade, you will not regret it. Better battery life, signal and overal performance of the device. And there is a few futures added that is really worth the upgrade.

Want to point me to the upgrade for the 8300?

Unfortunetly the 83xxwill not be getting os 5 as the space for the os is to small. Or that is what research has shown me.

PS: sorry for hijacking the thread :)

Bwana you don't have to share ur pin but it is always nice to meet guys who is intersted in sourcing out the free stuff for our phones.w1twolf thx for ading me buddy.

You can block on OS 4.XX as well by going to Options -> Security Options -> Firewall.
The firewall was a key feature of the Berry for a long while , OS 5 have done nothing revolutionary in terms of that feature :D

You seem to be blocking everyone with that method and then only allowing those you deem to be exceptions.

Well the firewall is enabled by default with no "ticks" in the boxes.
This is independant of BIS / BES.
I simply put in the ticks to take the screenshots to show you the available options.
My firewall is enabled but "open" and is not locked to specific entries in my BES contact list and so on ...

So how would you block a single person in OS 4 without having to approve everyone else? In OS 5 is is apparently possible.

I think I am "missing" you or you are "missing" the purpose of those screenshots.

You have the option to block ANYTHING except what is currently on your phone book. Deny all except XXX (where XXX is trusted ie a valid entry in your phonebook that you correspond with)

You also have the option to block a PIM / SMS / MMS / message from BIS / message from BES / provided you have the email address , mobile number , PIN number (where all of these parameters are NOT stored in a entry in the BB phonebook)

PM me with a contact number if I am confusing you or missing your point of the question.

I dont want to block everyone (deny all) who's not in my address book (deny all except XXX) - I get PINs from new people all the time and would like to continue to do so.

I just want to understand how I would block one particular number if the need ever arose.

You enable the tick by PIN and then type in that specific PIN number to "block" and you won't receive messages from it ie add an exception as per the screenshots.

PM me if you want to try it and I will phone you if you want and confirm that it is working.

You will have to know the detail of the device that you want to block though.
Unfortunately you cannot block on IMEI and I don't think you would want to enter such a long number anyways :)

We seem to be going around and around or I'm being particularly dense tonight. :)

If you block all pin messages (as per the first screen shot) "exceptions" would be to let the number through the firewall. When you tick the box the rule is that all pins are now blocked.

IOW - You cannot block specific numbers, you can only allow specific numbers by marking them as exceptions.

Yep , you got it now :D

The firewall is enabled by default however , just the setting for the individual messaging options is disabled unless you put a tick in each option and then add exceptions.

Default - deny all , add exceptions to allow -> not a bad idea on the device since if enabled it should prevent PIN 2 PIN spam (I have not heard of any occurences but if you were to get a rogue BB user sending you unsolicited messages then it is quite a useful option)

You mean you've got it now. You cant block individuals, hence my reluctance to post my PIN on a public forum. :)

The way i understand is that the firewall will let you select which pins/sms/calls/emails you want to allow through. Basicly the same way as you would block some ports on a router's firewall and allow only the ones through that you want to.

Each to its own for posting pin's to public forums :)
