BBM comes to Droid and IOS (For real)

Wow... looks like this is actually happening !
BlackBerry managed to squeeze in one surprise announcement during its huge conference keynote this morning: BlackBerry Messenger, the company’s popular messaging app, will finally jump to the iPhone and Android this summer.

This is the first time BlackBerry has brought BBM to other platforms, and it’s something the company’s fans have been begging for over the past few years. It’ll be available on iPhones running iOS 6 or greater and Android Phones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

“We will make BBM available as the premiere multi-platform IM solution all around the globe,” said Thorsten Heins, Blackberry’s CEO, on stage today during the keynote. “Even better, it’s free.”

I don't know if this was the best move for their hardware but will make BBM the defacto standard again.
 
Too little too late.

I dunno how they are going to survive like this. My boss has stuck to Blackberry through thick and thin, and finally after getting the Z10 finally decided he might actually be ready to switch (because no outlook calender and contacts syncronisation)

This will allow him to move without losing all his bbm buddies. As for the "free", how in the world are they going to ean money out of this. I will definitely switch permenantly to my Nexus 4 if this happens
 
Yeah, very nice of them to do this....but why? What can they possibly gain from this?
 
Strategic move for a country like South Africa where Blackberry is still very popular. Too many people on this forum assume that just because they use a smartphone, so does the rest of the country.

Yes but now Blackberry has made it possible for all those on Blackberry's to switch to other devices without losing their "friends".

Unless they are going to make money from it (subscription, advertising) I don't see the point.
 
Don't see the point. Whatsapp is better and costs virtually nothing.

Well since most of the stuff you are using is Google based and Babel will be integrated (no doubt) into Android it's safe to say that it will have a massive user base very quickly. If you have an Android you most probably have a Google ID so it will just "magically" start working for you.

Imagine Babel gets integrated with the messaging center on your Android device. It will be able to switch between using Babel and SMS seamlessly (they can do this so here is hoping).
 
Most people do not want to lose their friends / family / contacts that are still on BlackBerry so they will install the BBM app to keep in contact. If BlackBerry want to make some money, most people would pay a $1 per year or something small like that to be able to use the BBM iPhone or Android app.
 
What has happened to all the millions of Blackberry phones out there that we loved so much many years ago?
Simple we have bought iPhones or Android phones and gave our BlackBerry phones to our kids / others to use. So in order to keep in touch with our kids / others we would install the BBM app on our iPhones & Android phones
 
It's funny how people underplay the importance of BBM to most cellphone users in SA. BBM is still very popular, and far from dying, as most here would think. I would install this on my S3 the moment it becomes available.

Yes. You'll install it on your Samsung S3 and not your Blackberry.
