BBM, MXit, WhatsApp get new competitor in ZiNG

Reasons why I would like to use Zing

1. Supports read receipts
2. Supports system wide profile pic and friends will see your profile pic as with BBM
3. Zones - I like the news one.

Reason why I cant switch now (although will keep it installed for now)

1. No contacts on Zing hehehe

Lets all standardize on it. Whatsapp is working fine with a great interface.

It makes sense to standardize the chat clients, but it shouldn't be "whatsapp", it should rather be something like XMPP (jabber) that is open to anyone (gtalk uses it)

if it requires you to add people with usernames then I aint interested. That is what I love about WhatsApp and now Zing.

Oc - any idea how Zing works on a simpler java based handset? What is nice about watsapp is that you don't have to think about it - you get a 'browser' ping when someone sends you something - push messaging. I'm wondering if it works like that on a simpler phone. The big deal on non-smart handsets is having to exit an app to use another.

I really dont know. Perhaps Jan can ask them? I would think that on BB and Android, Zing is linked to the BB and Google push servers. IF not...then the service would be pretty much useless. On simpler Java based phones I dont know how push is achieved.

zing sounds like a crock of schit to me, doubt it will dethrone whatsapp and BBM.

i think this is a great little app, works well on the blackberry - gui a little squashed when compared to the likes of BBM/WhatsApp and it should be able to run in the background by simply pressing "back" - rather than going to the swap window function. I've got it running on an old Samsung Z400 in the "Basic" java mode. Just waiting for Zing Support to give me the pin..

hi Shaun - synchronise your address book and your friends will receive a free SMS inviting them to join you on ZiNG. Enjoy! Alternatively use the "quick add" option to select who you want to invite. Cheers

Sending out sms does that come from my talking airtime/prepaid credits - seriously I wouldn't like to SmS my lawyer etc... By accident that happen on another local IM platform I used deleted it the next day..

Received my SMS*Vodacom network* - I see no contacts :( What's the point I would prefer having chat rooms not a freaking IM platform - make chatting free then I will support u :)

I welcome any IM that does not chow my battery like Whatsapp. Stopped using mxit 6 years ago. BBm is by far the best IM chat that does not take ages to load.

I would welcome an app that is quick to load and light on battery consumption.

SMS invites don't cost any airtime, you don't have to worry about that.

The only costs involved, is using whatever data connection to send out and receive K/bytes of information via text. Unfortunately, it might cost you 50c for several hours of usage depending on what you do. You can even use WiFi if your phone supports it.

It has only been a day since the app has been launched. You can't expect your contacts to be using ZiNG already. You can be the first of them!

"unable to connect to server" that's the message on a BB Bold, do we need BIS running to get this app to work?

Could be. Mine is working and I am chatting to a friend on it. He has got a Blackberry also.

Not sure if I like it though. And I have a suspicion that Zing does not utilize push notification...but rather pulls messages in at certain intervals?

Thanks Okkie.

I guess there is no way to test it if everyone is running BIS?

Ok...just told my friend to rather talk to me on WhatsApp. Zing is irritating me. Interface feels crowded somehow and like I said above..dont think it uses push and therefore it wont be reliable in my view.

Thanks for the feedback. I think for smartphone users, whatsapp is still the winner and may even convince people to buy smartphones in extreme cases. I know i'd rather have my family on watsapp if zingthing doesn't do push messaging and has irritating interface.

I managed to install BIS but have not started ZING but will keep it until it's available in the Apple App Store.

Eh wayne? Iphone? I never put you down to an Iphone user :)
*I'm a poor android user
