BCM to put shacks at schools

Mayor’s plan for temporary shelters.

BUFFALO City Metro (BCM) mayor Zukiswa Ncitha plans to build hundreds of shacks on school grounds to accommodate homeless families who are waiting for their houses to be built.

A proposal by the metro has already been sent to the Eastern Cape department of education.

The department confirmed yesterday that it was considering this proposal. But some of the school principals and parents, who have children at the identified schools, have raised their concerns about the potential chaos such a move could cause.

Three schools in Mdantsane’s NU3 – Khanyisa Primary School, Litheni Senior Primary School and Sithembiso Senior Secondary School – were initially identified by the municipality to temporarily house to residents from Linge informal settlement while their houses are being built.

Thought it was 1st of April there for a moment.

Did they not close a few schools, in EC, last year?

If they insist on doing this then they should utilize unused gauvamint properties...., not properties that are meant to serve an important function.

Also this foolishness would expose young children to potentially dangerous persons and/or situations.

6 months later they'll be protesting when they're forced off the land. The school will be vandalized and those kids education will come to a halt for however long it takes to resolve the situation. There must surely be an open piece of land somewhere that can be used. These kids don't need this chaos on their schoolgrounds.

/pessimist mode off.

There must be other places to house these people. School grounds just does not make for a great place for temporary housing, potentially endangering the kids and the school.

And this is how much the ANC values education.

Yes it makes excellent sense. There are toilets and water. So we do not have to provide any ( so the money allocated in the budget can buy cars and houses for the more equal pigs ). And once the people are moved out we can tender on building new schools ( which will not happen but boy we will have a whole lot of money to loot again.)

Sickening.

+1

There is no temporary housing in this country.
Temporary possibly in terms of materials but consider having to move the families later, you'll just have major issues on your hands.
May as well just close the school and call it an informal settlement.

Not just education .. seems they have no regard for the well-being & safety of their children as well!

Children are Gifts remember. So you can pretty much do with them as you please. And when you don't want them anymore you dump them in a black bag. No return address needed.

Just when you think they've come up with the dumbest idea possible, they always find a way to step up their game.

Why should the school be vandalized? What exactly are you trying to say? Please people, calm down. Lets not go down that road - again. Yes, the people moving in will be poor but that does not mean they are not law abiding citizens. And the settlement will only be temporary.

I'm being intentionally blind to any argument in favor of this motion. It's a school - a place of education. Children don't need any more distractions and disruptions. They can find temporary housing elsewhere.

We will talk again when the schools are trashed and ten years later the temporary settlement is still there.

I think Mayor has gone mad,she must go for mental observation,I think Mandela’s money is going through her haed she cant think properly, she should have taken that leave that she was granted. Our kids are being raped by the community ,now she is saying our children must have the community to live with them in the same yard of schools so that they cant be victims of rape and her children have security in her home called bodyguards. She does not care about our children because her children are in studying in town not in townships. We vote for them and they treat us like rubbish. If the education agrees with this we must fight for our children.

And mind you, I can GUARANTEE that her children or grand children go to school in town and thus will not be affected by the possible dangers her proposal suggests.

This woman is so out of touch with problems facing societies and young children, it’s not funny. Actually it’s rather sad…. So shocked and angry right now!!!

Being ignorant doesn't mean you're right.

I agree.

It is also more of an expense since BCM is going to build these shacks.

Why not the other way round - build schools in informal settlements?

Because schools needs infrastructure and informal settlements doesn't have those. You have to pay rates and taxes to have those.
So you have to move these people somewhere to build the infrastructure, then about half of them can go back.. what do you do with the rest? Leave them in the place you moved them to.

The issue is everybody is waiting for their free stuff, but to get you have to give and the giving part is not so easy when you do not have what you say you have or don't have.

you want a house.
But you already have a house.
But it is not where you want it anymore, ( closer to work.. what ever.)
so it is easier to "sell" it and go live in an informal settlement.
Now you decide you want another free house.
So you say you never had a free house, You burn stuff and Toi toi.
So now they put your ID number in the system..
and it says You already have a house...
And the Circle continues...

( and in the mean time there are people trying to be honest and are screwed over by the system)

Because schools needs infrastructure and informal settlements doesn't have those.
Indeed. That's why it should be done. Start with basic, and expand as part of a decade-long integrated development plan.

But that requires vision, planning, and management. The budget is already there, just dissipated.
