Be careful when using Google's Gemini-based AI overviews

Warning to people using Google Search in South Africa

South Africans who frequently use Google Search to gather information should avoid merely accepting its Gemini-based AI Overviews as fact, especially when it comes to searches about serious topics.

As is the case with all generative AI systems, this feature can confidently present false information due to unreliable sources, misinterpretation, or AI "hallucination."

I guess to understand the problem we'd have to dig deeper into how LLMs summarize text. The text results are correct, the summary is not.

Wouldn't it be great if all of these AI results actually framed themselves as being unsure. Something like:

"I think this is the case, but here are some articles on the subject so you can double check things".
