Be fair with African critiscism...

Well Mr President, maybe if african leaders acknowledged constructive criticism, took note of the concerns of the citizens who voted their parties into power and delivered on their promises instead of labeling all critics racist the perception might just not be so negative

;)
 
I think it is fundamental to be truthful - and if the truth is most often negative then the result will be negative typecast. Maybe the continent (including Mbeki) must face the facts and the reality. Zim is a point in case. Don't deny the truth - face it and do something significant to make it positive.

They did, Bob's African peers voted his country to chair the UN Commission on Sustainable Development just the other day ;)

If the world were to be fair to africa with regard to criticism, instead of treating it like some gimped dead-loss and accepting "this-is-africa"isms? Few african leaders would be able to deal with the fallout. Face it, people are kind to africa in the same way they're kind to 14 year olds with cerebral palsy.
 
I feel for Mbeki, he makes an honest request and suddenly all we see is references to Zimbabwe all over.

nothing about Mozambique rebuilding it's economy fantastically, or Botswana being one of the most stable countries in the world, or about Namibia's continued economical growth or the amazing turn around Kenya has managed in the worlds eyes or the great strides that Morocco has made in the telecommunications industry or ....

I think all he is asking for is real honesty, but unfortunately it is only a dream. People like negativity. It gives them a reason to get on their soap boxes and lambaste everyone else.

I just wish someone would take Bob out so everyone can stop using Zimbabwe as their "proof"

Well said. Unfortunately whenever honesty means agreeing with anything Thabo Mbeki does, then all logic goes out the window with this bunch. I've come to learn that it's a waste of time to even suggest it.
 
It is a fair request Gavin but how seriously does Thabo expect the rest of the world to take him or his african peers when they openly prop up a madman's regime?
 
This underlines my view of Mbeki.
He just cannot accept criticism. The African Peer Review Mechanism, his handling of opposition in parliament, attempts by the ANC to oust Zille in Cape Town, sidelining of Zuma prospective new President, ousting of Sexwale and Ramaposa from opposing him, etc etc... it all fits.

No hard feeling for ou Thabo, but the type-cast of Africa as a poverty-stricken Black Hole is well justified. For instance, all the countries who have had wars/rebellions/unrest in the past few years. Zim (unrest, dictatorship), DRC (rebellion, massacres) CAR (civil war current), Chad (civil war current) Angola (recent civil war, current shooting over diamond mines), Sudan (Darfur Fiasco), Somalia (Need I say more?), Ethiopia (Involved in Somalia).

Count 'em. So tell me again...why would an American, Japanese or European company invest significant amounts of cash in the Dark Continent? Now the Chinese on the other hand...

Please tell what we can learn from Mozambique and Botswana. And why do you oppose the proposed leader of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development like that?

Is seeking for minerals and land for their poverty stricken masses. Start learning Chinese you will need it to understand your future bosses.

Its not Africa, it is the indigenous people! Whatever freebies they get they will break down and destroy. They can do nothing for themselves but will endeavor to try for millenniums.

Four countries you mention with some achievements with international help, Ok. What about the rest that was doing well and squandered it. Wake up man, Africa is doomed to be just that, Africa! The begging continent of this world and galaxies
