A man who beat a Muslim man to death in an argument about his beard was jailed for in effect eight years on Thursday, the NPA said.
Rudolph Viviers was sentenced to 12 years (four of which were suspended), for culpable homicide, and four years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Louw. The sentences would run concurrently.
The case was heard in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting at Palm Ridge.
Fight
Viviers and Zayne van Tonder insulted Muhammad Fayaaz Kazi and his friend Anser Mahmood about their beards at a Chicken Licken outlet in Magaliesburg on 6 August 2012.
An argument and fight ensued in which Kazi was severely beaten. He died in hospital.
Charges against Van Tonder were dropped.
Louw said the NPA was satisfied with the ruling.
After sentencing, Viviers, through his legal representative, asked for permission to address the families and asked for forgiveness.
The Media Review Network (MRN) expressed relief that the trial had been successfully concluded.
"The MRN also expresses its admiration and thanks to the SA Police Service for the rapid deployment of a special task team, which was responsible for the swift arrest, prosecution and conviction of the accused," executive Iqbal Jassat said.
