Bearings, Tyres WTF?

Hi,

My car recently starts making a strange humming sound when I reach +/- 80km/h.

At first I thought it was bearings, but I have had a bearing go and I know you hear it grinding and at lower speeds too.

I have had the two front tyres replaced (they were due) and have had the wheel's aligned. Someone suggested it is simply tyre/road noise however I am a lil paranoid about breaking down at night or something.

Anyone know? I drive a 2005 Ford Fiesta.

Maybe get some AA. The top of the line one is R1050 annually. Sure gives me piece of mind...

Hello Ford buddy.

Humming noises usually come from the tyres if Im not mistaken, so maybe swop the new tyres with the old, and see if the humming moves?

My 2002 ford fiesta had a hum at around 80km/h. We had the shocks and bearings replaced to no avail (although the shocks were worn). Then somebody said that the tires might've worn badly due to the shocks (old shocks - which were replaced) and since the hum didn't go away after many km (was hoping the shape of the tire would return to its normal shape), they had to be replaced. So we replaced the tires (the suspected ones to have been worn by old shocks - were at the back after a rotation) and the hum went away.

So check your shocks...if they are worn, the tires could be bleh as well.

I agree with the guys who say your tyres are the cause. I have also had this road noise problem, it sounds like a hum, and it went away when I replaced the tyres.

Thanks guys. I have replaced my front tyres so I suspect then it must be my back tyres. IE it is nothing to worry about then, tyres seemed fine even to the tyre people who replaced my front tyres?

I will get shocks checked out as well.

I'm guessing they put your old front tires at the back and put the new tires in front? If so, and your front shocks are worn, your now-rear tyres probably got worn by the bad shocks They wouldn't really be able to see an uneven wearing of the tires unless they actually look for it, methinks. Who knows took me a while to figure out it was my tires causing the hum!

most often it's very worn shocks causing the hum.

If you have new tyres on it, try deflating them a bit. They might be to hard. That also makes a humming sound.

On my Bakkie I'm now getting some shakes on the steering when I get to a certain speed. I'm sure my wife went up a curb or something She says she didn't. Now I'll have to have that checked aka Wheel allignment + Balancing = R $$$$

It's not so bad but it irretates the crap out of me. I'll maybe try and check the tyre pressure tonight. Might be that also.....

No when I took my car in for just a wheel alignement they found a bubble on my front tyre - being in need of replacing soon i bought new front tyres. The car is front wheel drive and I switched the front for the back a while back already.

So the new tyres in front are brand new and the rear ones still the old ones. I suspect it is the shocks, but can this be with a car that has done +/- 60 000 km?

will get it checked this weekend.

If I'm not mistaken my shocks were replaced at around 60 000km as well. Dunno if it's normal. Could be cheap stock shocks?
