The heavily tattooed Wilfred Hurwitz is used to being spat at and branded a "devil" or "murderer" - but on Friday morning the attack was physical.

He was left unconscious in a pool of blood in Brooklyn, Pretoria East, after being smashed on the back of the head with a brick and kicked in the face.

The 48-year-old tattoo artist had almost finished his daily 20km run when a bakkie came up behind him,its occupants insulting him about his appearance. He ignored the insults and continued running, thinking of the bowl of oats he was going to have at home.

"I realised they were looking for trouble when they made a U-turn and switched off the lights. Still I continued running but as I turned left into William Street the bakkie was inches [away] from me, revving," he said.

About six "big young men" got out of the bakkie and one of them said "Ons gaan jou nou op f** (Now we are going to f*** you up)".

"All I remember was a cracking blow on my head. I woke up moments later in a pool of blood," he said.

Hurwitz got his first tattoo 20 years ago and his last one about five years ago.

"This is how I want to look. I cannot believe people could be so aggressive about how another person looks. Pretoria is the only place with this mentality. Over the years, [Pretoria] has become a conservative stronghold. Why can't we accept and respect people who look different?"

In December, when Hurwitz went to a public swimming pool in Hatfield, a woman offered to pray for him because he was going to "burn in hell".

"I am not afraid, I am going to continue running. This is who I am," he said. Hurwitz said he will continue to go jogging.

Brooklyn police station's Lieutenant Linda Jerling said the police were investigating but that no arrests had been made.
Link.

Some sad, sad individuals out there (the perps, not this guy).

Police should stake out churches in the area on Sunday for the perps.

WTF!!!

which retard could be so threatened by someone, just because they have tattoos all over their body, that they need to beat him up!!

They're ignorant people who probably think they're prison tattoos.

Where's that forumite who said "fit in or fsck off" now?

I'm pretty sure he was talking about Muslims complaining about being forced not to wear a headscarf in school (something like that), and not tattooed people ;)

He's 48 years old and runs 20km daily. Now he gets beaten up while on a run and says it's because how he looks instead of a random event caused by some drunk guys. He also goes to public swimming pools.
He sounds a bit like an exhibitionist.

Just a buch of God fearing good old Afrikaans boys having some fun. Weg met jou Satan!

It says he was insulted before the time, but that he was beaten up because of his looks is only a guess.

Or uneducated, inbreeding idiots being themselves. Jy's dom seun! ........................jus saying

Disgusting.

To be honest when I read the thread title I thought it race or gay related and then I read the article and was wondering if that Pretoria had run out of blacks and gays.

Hilcrest swimming pool is close enough to where his shop is, a lot of University students go there. This oke is a chilled guy though, always friend. He also refuses to do tatoos on drunk people.

Never understood the need for them, all these people wanting to be individuals, having these things permanently damaging and defacing their bodies yet almost all of them have similar tattoos, like these tribal tattoos :D
Just my humble opinion

I also think that they look totally retarded, but I am not going to beat up someone just because I do not like what they do. People should have the right to be left alone.

Each one to his own @marine1. Some people do it as a fashion thing, others do it for a reason. I'm 37 and currently getting my 2nd tattoo done. Personally I love to hear the story behind each tattoo, some are extremely deep, others funny... Tattoos are art, and having the courage to mark yourself permanently with a piece of artwork on your body takes character and strength.

FYI, my second tattoo is a reminder of my fight against cancer and also a dedication to my wife for keeping me sane and alive!

I'm really indifferent about tattoos, I do think negative stigmas and stereotypes are associated with people who have visible tattoos but it's easy to tell teh difference between an expensive professional tat and something your inmate accomplished with a pin and BIC pen.
