Becoming a software engineer / programmer

The application process is divided into two steps, the first step is applying for a course which took place earlier this year. During this step you receive your student number after submitting all the documentation, the second phase which starts on the 18th of June is the registration for all the modules you'll need for you degree.

The next application window should be during September of this if I'm not mistaken.

yeah august, but still only means i can start in Jan :(

Yeah, get your feet wet in the mean time. How much have you programmed before and in which language? I might have a few things to keep you busy and give you a feel for things before you start;)

Honestly, not so much.

I have a very basic understanding and have worked with mysql, php, css html etc. but nothing like java, c#, c+ etc which is more the line I am thinking.

I would like to have some of those things things to keep me busy! I have an Honns. degree in IT and Computer Sciences, and I am fresh out of university. I am currently in SAP basis and I absolutely hate it. I would love to move to my initial hobby which is development. So, pretty pretty pretty please give me some of those things to do:whistle:

C# is pretty easy to do as a first language to get the basics down, I've got a few books lying around if your interested?

I'm doing BSc Comp science part time for fun so I doubt I'll have anything which will interest you:) you might have a few ineresting challenges for us noobs?

Hiro sounds a bit jaded and certainly not contributing anything worthwhile to the community. I call for a vote to ban his ass.

You need to realised that development doesn't really pay that well.. you are capped at about 60kpm... but being an independant SAp consultant will take you much higher and you can program in your spare time

I'd rather be capped at R60k than be a SAP consultant.

I totally agree. If money was everything in this world, I wouldn't have gone into IT in the first place. I have this view that you must wake up in the morning and not feel like you would rather just die than go to work.

Anyway, @Ipwn 4, some cool ideas we messed around with at univ. was building multi player games that used Bluetooth and AI and we also tried to use a lot of APIs, but I must admit that nothing I did was really amazing or industry worthy.

That is how you learn, I've spent most of my time writing server based apps which are either accessed through a browser or some sort of app. Most of them are useless to just about everyone but me, but isn't that what programming is all about? Simplifying a daily task with an app =)

Lately I've been implementing a way to use C++ and a compiler to do some assembly language. Quite enjoy popping things onto my breadbroard and seeing it come to life:D
