Feels like I picked a very bad time to get into IT as a "pale male".

People who study with me are getting job offers left right and centre, they average about 50 percent in internal marks, play games, listen to music in class and do not hold any international qualifications, yours truly has a 90 percent average and hold all international qualifications.

This is terrible, and extremely unfair. Not the fact that these folks get job offers, but that they obviously lack any interest or passion in IT!

My question is, what the hell do companies do that consist of 80 percent of these sort of people who just don't give a crap about their jobs? Is all responsibility laden on the few who do?!

Dude you picked a bad time to go into IT period.

salaries are crap unless you have experience and specialize in something a bit different, as a pc tech though expect low pay and hard work.

killadoob im going into primarily networking, the CCNA, MCSE route, with some comptia stuff which I hear doesn't matter.

The problem you find yourself with is that you still at the entry level of Networking. And that is where companies fill their AA quota. You will find as you get more experianced, things become err, a bit whiter. ;)

lol

I think it has to do with how you market yourself, maybe with a little bit of luck, and other stuff.

It took me about three years to relly break into this industry. Still finding my way though.
I know quite a few guys that immediately after a year of working, they were making R240K + p/a.

Just hang in there.

Which isn't enough to have a balanced life. I don't think you will ever be able to get rich in the IT industry, except if you go into sales...

Oh yes it is, im going to have to stick around and gun it, im 24 atm so my age will work against me as well, allot of things going against me at the moment, but yea. Wish me luck. No turning back :D

In the enterprise Java market there is a fair lot of shortages, big companies are starting hire a lot more juniors as experienced programmers are very hard to find.

Seems the .net market is not in the same situation and MCSE & MCSD market is overflowing with people looking for work but with little or none pratical experiance.

Veroland ya ive heard that much so far, hopefully my CCNA will be able to give me to boost above the rest of the MCSE applicants, will have to wait and see I guess, im just going to focus on finishing the course. Bugger job problems for now, ill deal with that once im nice and qualified :)

Dude there are jobs for all - but you need to select the right field. A+ is so yesterday. I'm a PHP developer with no IT education (besides my A+) and it was so easy to get into the industry. I'm also 33 so don't say I'm lucky.

lol cbrunsdonza, wow thats quite a jump in fields! A+ to PHP! Well done though, impressive flexibility on your part! :) Sorry about my little rant earlier, I tend to get a little negative when stressed!

cbrunsdonza is right, it also took a lucky break for me to get into the industry. I had to take a job with *VERY* low pay (barely more than I was making as a waiter) to get my foot in the door but once there I moved up rapidly.

Luckily that was more than 10 years ago. Now I'm a JEE architect / senior developer and working on some big projects in the financial sector.

I think companies do one of 2 things if they find themselves with these guys.

They hire more IT staff than they need because they know some people filling the quota, are only willing to be there to fill the quota.

OR

They hire the right amount of people, some don't work, and everyone else has to carry their work.

I started at the very bottom, like 4.5k pm living on my own lol but I had to in order to get experience. My CV is looking quite nice these days ^_^

The quota job hoppers do exist, and they do sometimes get big increases when they threaten to leave. Young guys getting paid tripple what Im getting, with less experience etc. But what can you do?.. Its SA's policy.
