Here's a simple guide to get your own free domain & hosting(for non-commercial use):

- Go to http://www.za.net - click 'whois' & test if the domain you want is available.
- Sign up for free hosting at http://www.atspace.com/
- Once signed up & logged in to atspace.com hosting control panel, click on 'hosting settings' on bottom left of page.
- Select 'domain manager' on upper left of page.
- Enter the domain you require & click 'add domain'
- Write down the servers listed under 'NS' - will be something like 'ns1.atspace.me' & 'ns1.atspace.me'
- Return to http://www.za.net & select 'register', then 'registration form'
- Enter your details & use the servers you wrote down earlier under 'name1' & 'name2' at bottom of page.
- Upload your site to atspace.com
- Wait for confirmation from http://www.za.net - can take a few weeks!
- Wait another 72hrs for dns propagation...

If your domain does not propagate after 72hrs, log a ticket with atspace.com, they offer good support.

Awesome thread, thank you for this post oldhat. Very informative and works like a charm if you follow it step by step. Note that the za.net guys DON'T accept gmail accounts for signup. I imagine the same applies to hotmail.com etc. I used my office account - you can likely use the account that your ISP gave you.

Thanks again, very useful!

That hosting providers free package looks decent for the price ;)

I am trying them out right now.

great post!

Have been using ATSPACE & 50WEBS for a few years with no problems, but 50WEBS do not offer authoritative name servers with free hosting package, so you can not use your own domain with them(unless you use some other domain service - there are still a few free ones).

How sure are you about this? I have a couple of za.net domains registered on my gmail addy.

EDIT:
Must be something new they added
Why don't you accept registrations from gmail.com or yahoo.com email addresses?

Recently there has been a huge influx of registrations from unverifiable gmail.com and yahoo.com email addresses from unscrupulous users mass-registering domain names purely for use as spam email sources. Very often these applications also contain other forged contact details. To combat this, we are refusing all registrations from these email sources until further notice. We may expand this list of addresses as required.

Please make sure that the contact details you submit with your application are valid and verifiable.

Thanks for the informative post. I'll check it out.
