Unimportant trivia but I'm curious -

Does anyone know why the industry switched from beige cases / monitors to black ?

no idea but the black is prettier (even if dust shows up easier).

the beige also tends to stain (cigarettes, food and drink).

I'm happy my entire setup is black. It's much more calming and relaxing than beige/white would have been :)

from beige it went to black, and now its going to white. Glossy finished are also becoming the norm. Also various colour options are becoming common these days

Around the early 2000's, Dell and HP seemed to go big with it from then onwards too, my home PC I sanded down the beige case and spray painted it black, didn't look so hot though :-( but my monitor was black in 2001 cause I got a Dell one.

The ugly yellowing stains that those cases suffered was probably the main reason, besides beige is such a dull and sterile colour...

So.... there was not an industry decision to change colour of mouses, monitors etc.

Somebody made a black version and everyone else just jumped on the bandwagon ?

Why was the original colour beige decided on ?

I believe computer equipment was originally beige because all other office equipment at the time was beige (fax machines, copiers, electric typewriters, etc.)

This begs the question "why was all the existing non-pc equipment beige?". This is most likely because it is a neutral colour that would fit in well with the colour schemes in various office environments.

As for the change to black, I assume one or two manufactures decided to modernize the look and feel their equipment to make it stand out. The same reason mice and mice buttons were square and are now mostly rounded.

For us now, black looks good and seems modern. twenty years from now all our computer equipment may be orange.

I remember seeing a black PC (Creative Labs?) in PC Format in 1999/2000. It had average specs and was overpriced but at the time it looked awesome
