It sucks!!!

My great-grand pa, grandpa had it, my dad had it, now I have it and chances are if I have a son he will also have it. Speak about a tainted bloodline! Type 1... :(

I do not live a risky lifestyle but it looks like I will have to implement some serious changes! Born in 1982... this is too soon!

My Grandad had it, but because of his drinking. Nor my dad or me or any of my brothers have it. It is a very bad illness. I can only hope not to ever get it. It affects your legs, your eyes, you erections and your skin. You need to inject yourself and/or take tablets after every meal. Can't eat what you want... Ouch, just ouch. Good luck man, keep well medicated and you should live a long and healthy life. Grandad died age 70 odd something because of cancer and not diabetes :)

Both my Grandfathers have it (well 1 still has it as the other one is quite dead).

Staying healthy and eating healthy can still reduce your risk even if it's genetic. It's not a death sentence if you get it either...just look after yourself.

I see type 1 is the one needing insulin injections. Is there an alternative to injections - I'm kark bang of injections if I had to I'd be miserable? But it is a really manageable condition.

They have a pen for it, you don't even see the needle.

Unfortunately Type 1 is not really avoidable with genetics.
But the good news is that there are lots of easy ways to manage it and not let it negatively affect your life.

Stay healthy and eat well :)

There are artificial pancreases coming down the line soonish. I think these are external units but I read about a new technology that is an actual synthetic pancreas that is embedded in the body and manufactures insulin like a real pancreas. As always, expect revolutionary technology in "5 years time"

To elaborate, the artificial pancreases are external insulin pumps that can dose out insulin from a reservoir based on your blood sugar levels instead of on a timer and manual adjustments. This means your quality of life is much closer to someone without type 1. The downside is that insulin pumps can be accessed wirelessly so someone can kill you remotely.

What kind of symptoms do you have? It's not an issue in my blood line but I used to have a very high sugar diet and am wondering if that's created complications...

I think the biggest indicators are:

Being thirsty all the time
Going to the loo and peeing more frequently. If you need to get up to pee 3 or 4 times a night... Go see a Doctor.

Other symptoms would be blurry vision, dry and sore feet. Worse case scenario, sugar coma.

That sounds like a delicious dessert!

After my pancreatic attack that nearly killed me a year ago I've had to reevaluate my lifestyle. I eventually got to seeing a dietician two months ago and she has helped turn my health around.

While I'm not a diabetic, I've got live like one before I become one. I can highly recommend seeing somebody to setup an eating plan for you and your family.

Learning to eat a balanced meal is important regardless of your health condition.

I've had those symptoms my entire life. One underestimates these warning signs.

I'm worried that I may become diabetic. Been using too much sugar in my diet for years. It's really hard to cut out sweet things.

Pre diabetes and insulin resistance is easily controlled by a low carb diet

I could be wrong but I think that is the symptoms for type 2 Diabetes which is the opposite of type 1.

Yeah my dad has it... I made the most bland pressure cooked food last week because I had to consider him.

Why bland? Absolutely no need for it...

Roast beef/lamb/pork and roast veggies, no carbs, no insulin response
Sugar free hot chocolate mixed with whipped cream, carb free chocolate mousse
Bacon and eggs fried in butter
Etc
Etc
