Being forced to spend R6k on an upgrade...

Fellow geeks...

I find myself in a curious position where I'm being forced to spend a credit of R6.4k on PC hardware...

I currently have a Q8200, Abit x38 board, 4gb DDR2 800, ATi 4870 512mb and more than enough hd space.... I guess my limitation is my PSU which is a Neo 480w if i recall...

For ~R6.2k I can get a gigabyte 1366 board, i7 and 6gb of ddr3 2000mhz.... but I do wonder it if its not a huge waste... Any other recommendations of what I can do with money to burn?:confused:
 
thats a big waist of money, first ask your self what do u realy use the PC for, and see if there isnt rather a upgrade for some other component that needs to be done, 4gb of ram is really more than enough
 
I agree, i wish I could get the money as cash... unfortunately thats a no-go though...

Oh, i also already have a 26" screen.... speakers are logitech (forgot the model but they are entry 5.1s)...
 
Sell the old and buy a new.
 
Buy a big psu for next time you have to upgrade, and a nice big SSD with the change.

How abount a media PC for the living room? Or how about selling on your credit to someone else?
 
I have a Q6600, with 4 gig ram and a decent GPU + PSU. I OC'd the Q6600 about a year and a half going on 2 years now. No ways is it worth while for me to upgrade yet, so for you I would say wait till you cant play new games on full spec.... don't waste the money.

If you really want to waste money, sell the 4870 get a better card. Maybe buy a CM Hyper 212+ and OC your CPU. CM also has fantastic PSU's. Mines a bit old now, but great value for money (CM 600w Silent Pro M Series). And that powers all 3 of my HDD's, a GTX280 XXX, all my USB peripherals (Force feedback Logitech Steering wheel, Joystick, external HDD, 5.1 surround headphones & my wireless mouse).... no probs.

So you returned something and they gave you credit instead of cash?

Get a decent 600W PSU such as a Corsair, and a decent case. Components like that can last for a lifetime - you'll change your other components but not your case and PSU. Then, upgrade your motherboard, ram and CPU to a decent standard, while leaving your GPU as it is. Your GPU is not too far behind, and with ATI's new cards coming out soon, you may as well wait. Maybe an i5 750?
 
Do you have to buy PC components? Cant you buy other tech items.. Otherwise as the other guy said, build a HTPC :)
 
if you dont want to upgrade, then buy a pc to sell on gumtree.

otherwise wait a few more months, and get the new ATi series
 
Just a random question, can't he claim his money back due to that new consumer protection act?

Anyways I'd pop onto www.carbonite.co.za and post you PC there, will be sold in a heart beat, then use the total to buy a nice new machine.
Which store to you have the credit with? If their prices for parts aren't reasonable, then I'd try sell the credit to some one else.
 
You already have a pretty decent setup.

The Socket 1366 PC's are really expensive. I really don't think its wise to upgrade your CPU at this stage.

I would simply upgrade the PSU (like Corsair TX750W) and get a new graphics card (HD5870) if you're really into gaming.

Otherwise invest in a SSD or two in RAID :)
 
Or you could just donate it to me :) I'll find a use for sure!! There's always something to upgrade :D
 
Either sell the value to someone. (Like in offer to purchase someone R6400 worth of components for, say R5800 cash..)

OR

Get something you want, OTHER than PC components, like an LC(E)D TV - but buy it from a PC shop. (Lots of shops sell 50" Samsung TVs etc...) You will obviously need to pay in a bit.
