Harare - The Beitbridge border post has been closed amid imports restriction protests.

In a breaking news story, The Herald reported that, thousands of people including Zimbabweans and businesspeople from South Africa blocked the border post in protest of the implementation of statutory instrument number 64 of 2016 (IS).

The IS removes a host of products from open imports and requires importers to get an import permit to bring them into Zimbabwe.

In mid June, the Zimbabwean government gazetted stringent regulations meant to control the importation of goods that were available locally under Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016.

Earlier reports say commercial cargo has been stuck at Beitbridge Border Post for the past seven days as importers struggle to get permits to ship goods that are restricted from Open General Import Licence under Statutory Instrument (SI) number 64 of 2016.

According to The Herald several trucks are stuck on the South African side since the Zimbabwe side has no adequate space to accommodate them. Under normal circumstances, the trucks proceed to Zimbabwean when the customs clearance of the cargo has been completed.

Yeah, was reading about the new import restrictions Mad Bob has come up with the other day... he seems to have decided to 'sanction' Zim off from the rest of the world

That said though, we all know its all lies as Zim has not been able to trade or communicate with the outside world due to the US for decades which is why they are starving and economy failed /s

Let's not laugh to quick! South Africa is one of the few countries in the world were population growth is higher than the economic growth.

This is not cool. People would say why would one go to Zim. But for people and business like where I work Huletts, we need to get our new equipment through to be able to continue sugar production.
This is not good for our share price! <goes off to corner and cry, because of just bought shares>

Zim army deploys after protesters set Beitbridge warehouse on fire

Beitbridge - Zimbabwe's army was Friday deployed in the restive border town of Beitbridge where protesters angry about a new ban on imports set on fire a warehouse belonging to the state revenue authority, state radio reported.

Three people had been arrested by early Friday evening, according to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) report.
ZBC said the situation on the Zimbabwe side of the border had been "really volatile" earlier in the day.

Protesters "barricaded the road from the border post to the Masvingo turn-off (on the main road to Harare) and destroyed traffic lights. Sign posts and other infrastructure in the town were also destroyed," said ZBC.

"Police are on the ground. The army as well is on the ground to ensure that peace prevails," it added.

Protesters also massed on the South African side of the border early on Friday.

Traders are up in arms over the Zimbabwe government's recent decision to limit imports from South Africa in what it says is a bid to boost the local economy.

Those wanting to bring in even basic goods like peanut butter, jam, body lotion and shoe polish have to get a permit to do so. They're being threatened with a hefty fine if they arrive at the border with any of these goods but without a permit.

Destroying things is not the solution Africa. Soon you'll end up right back 200 years ago and then start destroying each other again.

In the '80's I constantly predicted that Africa would be rediscovered in about 2050. Still convinced I'm right.

Doubt they will do much. Like most civil servants they will get their June salaries in a week's time.

Beitbridge protests: At least 71 arrested

Harare - Police have arrested 71 people in Zimbabwe's border town of Beitbridge following angry protests over attempts to restrict imports, the state Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) reported on Saturday.

"Security has been beefed up" in the town, which is on the busiest border crossings in the southern African region, ZBC reported in a radio news bulletin.

Protesters on Friday set a government warehouse on fire, looted a fast-food outlet, destroyed a house and vandalised traffic lights as tensions mount over a new requirement that traders obtain import permits for basic goods like jam and mayonnaise, according to a report in the state-owned Chronicle.

With jobs in the formal sector hard to come by in cash-strapped Zimbabwe, many now depend on informal trading to boost their incomes.

That is one area where Zim are better than South Africa. When protesters burn stuff down in Zim at least they get arrested - in South Africa the ANC gives them what they want.
