Belgrade honours Mandela

Belgrade - Nelson Mandela was proclaimed on Tuesday an honorary citizen of the Serbian capital Belgrade, the Tanjug news agency reported.

The city municipality voted unanimously to convey the honour on the former South African president and Nobel Peace prize laureate for his contribution to the "fight for equality, peace and development of democracy in the world", said the state-run agency.

Mandela, 88, has won hundreds of awards around the world for standing up to South Africa's apartheid regime and supporting numerous causes since retiring from politics in 1999.
