Morning all

Im new here, hope to spend some time here.

I have been trying to find out why I can't get a decent score on 3dmark06. Here is my pc spec @ the moment

AMD dual Core 64
4600+ CPU
Asus M2N-SLI deluxe motherboard
2 gigs 667mhz ram
2 x 8600 GT 256mb DDR3 graphics cards
etc etc

I get a score of around 8500 on 3dMark06. My mate who has a similar system, gets around 11000.

So, i borrowed his 8800 gt graphics card, and scored pretty much what i score with my SLI'd 8600's.

Do you think that my 667mhz ram, and the 4600+ cpu is bottlenecking my performance ??

Any other comments or advice ?

Thanks in advance.

yea also your 8600gt is bottlenecking your score as well

im amazed 2 8600gt's can keep up with a 8800gt

get an intel core 2 if your worried about botlenecking

I don't really wanna go replace my mobo and cpu, so i was thinking about upgrading my CPU to a 6000+, and getting 1033mhz ram.

Then again, how much of a difference will this upgrade contribute to fast FPS in games ?

Agreed with Grim. If your mobo supports the higher RAM go for it. It can only help.

Also if you are using the full mark with all tests on then the CPU tests will be key. They don't offer much in terms of picture quality but they show your FPS solely on CPU power, I also have the same type of CPU (AMD etc.) but is a 4200 and it get around 1 - 2 FPS during the CPU test where that thing jumps out the water over the Zeppelin.

In all honesty before my upgrade of RAM and Bios, I even got 0 FPS at one stage on that test.

PS: Have you updated your BIOS? And have do you have the dual-core optimizer installed? Specific for AMD. The latest one is on their website.

I also get between 0 - 2 on the CPU tests, so perhaps thats where my problem lies.

I upgraded my bios on Monday cuz i was having huge issues with my PC.

I am also running AMD optimizer, but haven't downloaded the latest one from their site. I'll give that a try.

I've played around with the AMD overclocking tool, but when i go above 103%, my pc just restarts. Dunno if this is normal !!

Also, i see in the BIOS, you can make your 667mhz ram run @ 800mhz, how risky is this ?

lol, i've realized that pc's are just like modding cars, its just never enough !! :D

Except when you put a V8 in a car, you know that your going to be getting a massive boost in power and not just a few more FPS when you put in a new CPU.

Don't suppose it is the latest optimizer, just check the file version and ensure its the latest. If your keen on overclocking, be careful first of all, thereafter do it manually in the BIOS. Remember that when you tweak, go small. Little bit by little.

I dont really want to play around with overclocking, my machine gives so much trouble as is. I've formatted and re-installed twice this week already. I keep getting blue screen of death !!

That aside, i think im going to borrow some faster ram and see if that helps before i go and buy some.

Formatting twice in one week is not normal...Sounds to me like some of your hardware may be on the blink.

Check that you getting enough power to all your components. Had an issue where a friend assumed that he didn't need a four pin power connector for his mobo, it was an additional one and he kept on getting the blue screen until he plugged a connector in. Unfortunately he had done serious damage to his graphics card, sound card etc and had to get whole new parts.

I would check the RAM, may definitely be an issue. Also I know it sounds daft but check all your IDE cables for holes. I had a hole in one of the threads on mine before I went all SATA. Caused some serious problems...

Thanks guys

I've got to get to the bottom of this problem ! I suspect it could be my system drive, its a pretty old 40 gug IDE drive, perhaps its on its way out. Although when i was getting the blue screen, i swopped out HD's with another one that has windows on it, and it bombed out @ the same place.

i suspect my motherboard could be faulty, since sometimes i power it up, and it switch it off, only after wriggling the power button connector on the board, does it come right.

Im currently running a 420watt power supply, and i dont think its enough to supply both graphics cards with enough power !

Right now, I could quite happily throw this machine in the bin, and start again from scratch, but that would be far too costly !

Well I would suggest three things, a New Mobo if your are having power problems with it. You don't want to have to replace the CPU and mobo. Better RAM which your new mobo should support and then finally, I think if you want to remain Sli, new PSU. Or rather I would suggest you sell both the 8600's and get an 8800GT:D
