Rafa Bentiez's position at Liverpool looks to be under threat, according to reports this morning.

Most of the Monday morning papers claim that Benitez is on borrowed time after a further breakdown in his relationship with the club's owners over the weekend.

The Times suggests that owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet have lost faith in Benitez, and his sacking is a case of 'when' rather than 'if':

'In the best-case scenario, he may yet see out the remainder of the season before being sacked or leaving by mutual consent, but the word from within the club is that the American tycoons have lost all trust in him after recent challenges to their authority and that, despite his popularity with supporters, his dismissal is only a matter of time.'

Benitez has been unhappy about the perceived lack of a transfer activity at Anfield as he chases targets in the January transfer window.

The Liverpool boss has complained that Hicks and Gillet 'do not understand' the transfer system in Europe.

He said after Saturday's 3-0 win over Newcastle: "They need to understand how difficult it is to sign players.

"I was trying to explain, now we try to keep focus and win games. If they understand what the market means they will understand we are trying to do the best for the club."

The Guardian claims that Benitez could be on his way before Hicks and Gillet arrive in England for a meeting in the middle of December:

'The relationship has deteriorated with astonishing speed in the past week and BenĂtez's future may well be decided before he meets Gillett and Hicks in 20 days' time. Their fate in the Champions League will be decided by December 11 - they play in Marseille on that date and entertain Porto on Wednesday in must-win fixtures - and the Americans will not release substantial funds if they are out.'

Last week Hicks told Benitez to 'quit talking' and coach the players he has, which prompted the Liverpool manager to repeatedly say "as always I am focused on training and coaching my team" at a press conference on Thursday.

Hicks and Gillet issued a statement last night in which they reiterated their stance that they will discuss transfer targets with Benitez when they visit England:

"Despite speculation in today's newspapers, there is nothing new to say.

"We had a good win yesterday and have got some very important games coming up starting with Porto on Wednesday, followed by Bolton and Reading, before Marseille and Manchester United in a few weeks.

"Both of us, together with chief executive Rick Parry, plan to meet with Rafa when we come over mid December to make decisions on the team's requirements at that time."

Could just be media hype but if true Liverpool are at a real crossroads.

It's clear Rafa probably can't win the Prem. However that doesn't mean he isn't a very good manager. Just not a great one which you need to win the worlds toughest league. Will Liverpool take a step forwards or backwards.

The questions is who will replace him?

This highlights a big problem with the modern game: patience or more correctly the lack of it.

Lets be clear: I despise liverpool and all things scouse but who do you think would do a better job then benitez?

im not to sure

what has benitez really done though?

he won a champs league and an fa cup, you cannot live on the fact you won a champs league 2 years ago

liverpool have a good squad, they need a manager who is willing play attacking football
a manager who will not let crouch (one of the best strikers in england) sit on the bench

liverpool need a manager that can play in the prem league and does not concentrate on the champs league only

did i mention liverpool have a really good squad, alot of quality players

liverpool need one more signing, a wing who cross the ball well to find crouch

I agree that they need to change their insipid style of play, but like I said: who do you have in mind?

Changing the manager again in such a short space of time does nothing for the long term stability of the club.

a manager who will not let crouch (one of the best strikers in england) sit on the bench

Now this part actually made me laugh out load. Good one.

Consistancy is the key to success in any sport

eg - Jake White in charge for 4 years (Springboks)
Alex Fergie over 20 years ( Man Utd )
Carlo Ancelotti ( +- 8 years Milan )
Fabio Capello ( Juve and Milan )
Wenger ( Arsenal +- 10 years)
Clive Woodward ( England +- 4 years )

Bafana bafana - 11 coaches in 11 years and nothing achieved

ic dude, im telling you now given the chance i believe crouch could be the highest goal scorer in the prem league

go look at his record when he plays for liverpool, its pretty good

i have also never seen any striker hit a hatrick like crouch did

head
left foot
right foot

that shows talent and crouch so much talent

ubercal in order to have success with a team you need good players man, without good players you have nothing

source

didnt know owen could header hahaha

yea but owen is a great player, when he is not injured which is about 3 months out of every 5 seasons

Because you've never seen it doesn't mean it hasn't been done. Off the top of my head and just going back a few years: Shearer, Henry and Van Nistlerooy all did it and I'm sure a few other lesser names.

Crouch has height and decent control for such a lanky bastard but thats about it.
