Hi folks

I unfortunately live in internet Mordor (Farrarmere, Benoni). 2mb ADSL line max, that does not work most of the time. Anyone else in the area that managed to find an alternative solution? Wireless broadband? From where?

Seems like there is such a gap in the market there, willing to throw money at someone. I just need someone to throw it at. I know there are fibre lines in the area (supposedly abandoned). I got a place to give me a quote on linking my house directly to this fibre line. A whopping R1600pm for a 2mb line, and R7259pm for a 10mb line.

Its a joke. Does anyone know of any expansion plans, or a service provider that can provide ok internet? Not looking for massive speed, just something that works.

Please? Give me hope?

Where in Farrarmere?

I live in Farrarmere and am on 20Mbps at my home, and may be able to assist.

I also happen to be the CEO of Crystal Web Internet Service Provider. Fibre is currently being pulled through all of Farrarmere by Telkom...;)

DJ - I am in Northmead (corner of Aster and Ash Street). Do you know if Telkom plans to put a MSAN on the corner of Kanna and Oak Street? Surely I will then be able to connect at 20 or 40Mb?

Don't you wanna move to Bergbron and bring some fibre with you :)

I'm really not 100% sure to be honest.

There's a massive number of lines moving to new MSANs this evening at 22:00. That device is not on the list and I cannot see the Telkom infrastructure upgrade plans for all locations...

Verstik ek nou aan my koffie!

Didnt expect a resonse that might lead to something. I stay in Virgo Street, Farrarmere.

Am I in luck?????

You may be. A new MSAN was installed today at Sheridan and they will be connecting existing customers to it over the coming days and weeks. New copper was also laid to various areas close to you (not sure if you were included there). They opted not to install fibre here though which is an odd decision on their part considering the LSM bracket of this area.

If they don't connect you soon, order a brand new DSL line and ask them to confirm that it will be installed on the Sheridan MSAN. Then cancel the existing one. With your distance you'll get around 20Mbps. Only issue now is they need to increase the backhaul connection at the exchange as it's approaching a tight squeeze soon and more MSAN end users will hit that hard, so I'll be fighting behind the scenes to ensure the exchange doesn't congest...

Wonder if this has anything to do with my internet being down. I hear what you are saying and I am truly excited that I might have a chance here. Should I cancel my existing line and order a new one? Or wait to see if they connect me? This is the first I hear about any of this, but awesome news. What can I do, where can I sign?

DJ... they won't cut over the MSANs until the backhaul has been upgraded. S.O.P.

That should be the case, but the cutover is planned for next week and backhaul capacity remains the same. Hopefully the work order and circuit numbers are all ready to process then...

Remember that the DSLAMs are probably on ATM links while the MSANs must be on metro ethernet. They won't link the DSLAMs to the M-E so the current backhaul capacity won't change until the subs are cut over to the MSANs.

Yes, if your net was up and down today this is the reason. The new copper was trenched over the last two days and went live today, so you shouldn't be up and down again today.

I'd suggest waiting before ordering a new line. It often takes some time for the Telkom systems to reflect the existence of a new MSAN so the call centre will give you old information. You will in all likelihood see your line stats improve drastically next week some time once you are moved over to the MSAN. But being on 2Mbps means they will need to switch your port over to the new box, so expect downtime when this happens, but don't be too alarmed - thereafter you'll be back up with decent stats.

Only thing left to do is sign up with www.crystalweb.co.za to make sure that you can take advantage of the new speeds. *

*Shameless punt...:D

I will be you biggest ambassador ever if any of the plays out and affects me. Will come RUNNING to you. Some of what was said above was over my head. But I will sit tight and pray that this happens. Thank you DJ for taking the time to respond, you sir have made my day! The timeline you have given matches my issues exactly, my net went down completely this Wed, have not tested it today.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you

If you don't come right within 2 weeks then send me a PM here and I'll make sure you are moved over to the new MSAN. But wait it out until then and let's see. I'll also confirm once we are up and running on the new MSAN for you guys as well...

Hi DJ...

Can you please confirm that this Sheridan MSAN is up and running as per your previous message? I cant get a better speed on the Telkom ADSL checker yet. It says:

ADSL Availability
Service Not Available (I find this worrying as I have had ADSL for over a year now)
Maximum speed available in your area 2 (Copper)

Should I now order the new line as per your suggestion and try to get it on the Sheridan MSAN?

Please let me know
