Bentley has confirmed that the new Bacalar, an ultra exclusive convertible from its Mulliner coachbuilding division, will be revealed tomorrow (3 March).

The limited edition had been set for an unveiling at the Geneva motor show this week, but following that event's cancellation will make its debut live on Bentley's YouTube channel at 830am.

The coachbuilt special edition will be only the second two-seater to come out of Crewe since 1930, with a compact rear luggage space housing a pair of bespoke travel cases, also from Mulliner. The wraparound cockpit is unlike anything in Bentley's production line-up, but bears a strong resemblance to that of the EXP 100 GT concept from which the Bacalar draws much of its styling inspiration.

Although it hasn't been officially confirmed, it's likely that the Bacalar is the £1.5 million open-top grand tourer first detailed by Bentley late last year. To be sold under the Mulliner brand, the convertible will be aimed at wealthy buyers who seek out rarer models for private collections and investment opportunities.

The rarest two-door Bentley of the modern era, and the ultimate expression of two-seat, open-air luxury, this definitive Grand Tourer spearheads a return to coachbuilding by Bentley Mulliner - the oldest coachbuilder in the world.

Just 12 examples of this striking, limited edition model are being created, guaranteeing rarity and exclusivity, and offering supreme luxury and breath-taking performance. Bacalar looks to the future of bespoke luxury motoring - each model will be handcrafted in Bentley Mulliner's workshop in Crewe, according to the individual customer's personal tastes.

This exceptionally rare car is appropriately named after Laguna Bacalar in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, a lake renowned for its breath-taking natural beauty, continuing Bentley's strategy of naming cars after remarkable landmarks which started with Bentayga in 2015.

Bacalar has been brought to life by Bentley Mulliner, reviving its specialism in providing rare coach-built cars to only a few discerning customers. A roofless Barchetta design with all-new and highly muscular coachwork, embracing a myriad of options and materials, each Bacalar will be truly unique, the result of direct interaction between the Bentley Mulliner design team and the individual customer.

The Bentley Mulliner Bacalar spearheads a new era for the British car maker’s coachbuilding division, which will now launch an ultra-exclusive model as often as every two years.

The £1.5 million Bacalar, an open-cockpit grand tourer, is limited to just 12 units, all of which have already been allocated to loyal customers.

The two-seat design is heavily inspired by the EXP 100 GT concept, which was revealed for Bentley’s centenary last year, with the two cars having been designed side by side.

It's not a convertible. There is no top for it at all, apparently. And they're only building 12. So this is purely a vanity show off car for 12 people with too much money who live in areas with predictable weather, i.e. a PR exercise.

New Bentley Mulliner Bacalar: the 'ultimate expression' of roofless luxury

Bentley Mulliner has whipped the wraps of the new Bacalar, with the Crew-based luxury automaker billing the roofless grand tourer as the “ultimate expression” of two-seat, open-air opulence.

The bespoke Bentley’s name is derived from "Laguna Bacalar", a lake in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Bentley says it's the “most dynamically sculpted model to date”, with its Barchetta design language harking back to the days of classic roofless sportscars.

The Bacalar employs an uprated version of the firm’s W12 engine. In this application, the 6,0-litre twinturbo-petrol mill, which is coupled with a 48 V mild-hybrid system, produces 485 kW (up from 467 kW). The 900 N.m torque figure remains unchanged. Power is sent to all four corner’s via Bentley’s rear-biased active all-wheel-drive setup.

According to the automaker, the Bacalar (seen here dressed in Yellow Flame paintwork) shares no body panel with any other Bentley. The door handles are, however, derived from those of the Continental GT. Fresh head- and taillamps can be seen fore and aft. The doors are manufactured from carbon-fibre, while the rear clamshell is made from light-weight aluminium. Extended wheel arches, housing bespoke 22-inch alloys, and a 20 mm wider rear track (than the Continental GT) lend the Bacalar an imposing stance.
