My husband is thinking about leaving his career field (education) and wants to move into IT. Unfortunately, time and financial constraints don't really allow him to study a full-time 3-4 year degree and UNISA isn't an option since distance learning doesn't work for him. We've juggled a few things around and he can take a year off from work to study full-time.

He's really good with computers and wants to do Support Services or PC Engineering in IT and we've found some courses at Damelin, Mancosa and Rosebank College. While all the courses are SAQA accredited, I'm struggling to find more information about international accreditation, especially if we want to move overseas in the next few years.

Any feedback from people who have done those or similar courses? Is there good scope for growth in the industry?

Does your husband currently have a degree or honours degree?

There is this course for non-IT educated people at UCT:

http://www.sit.uct.ac.za/sit/postgrad/masters_information-technology

Trying to get overseas with a 1 year certificate and a few years of experience will be very difficult. I suggest the above or sucking it up and doing the UNISA degree (preferably to honours).

What's his current education?

The BSc route plus honours if possible. It is more foundational. The UCT M.IT. Route failing that - it’s not clear how this course is generally received, but it is less time and is technically a masters degree.

A 1 year "IT" certificate is probably not going to get him a job in Bloemfontein.

Also, he worked in education, but UNISA doesn't gel with him?

He has 2 options... Start tutoring private, or bite the bullet and distance learn / upskill while holding down his current job until he has a "IT" qualification.
