Hi. Touring country to some slightly remote areas with some foreigners over rest of month. My primary sim is on an MTN contract with a fairly limited monthly data allowance (appr. 500Mb?).

My phone can take a 2nd sim which is like to set up for data and use phone as a hot spot for everyone while we're travelling.

Best value for money data out there at the moment with reasonable geographical reach? I'm not looking for a contract, I'd prefer to pay once and use until the cap expires (it wouldn't do any harm to have some remaining after the trip to supplement the MTN contract monthly cap which I seem to reach often).

TIA

How much data are you looking at?

Have a look at eg. axxess' MTN/3G APN offers. It works 'on top of' your existing MTN contract SIM via an additional APN added to your settings. Best of it all is - no contracts.

Had been advised to look at Cell C's 10Gig (Yearly) @ R599. That would last me a good few months. Was looking for something comparable as I'm not sure if Cell C's signal is good enough nationally (esp. for touring outside of the major centres i.e. Google Maps, area specific research on Google, etc) .

You will get signal outside major areas sure, but unless you go with Vodacom you going to have trouble getting lte in some of those areas. Next best bet would be mtn, but telkom and CellC have a big focus on cities and outside of those you gamble anything from no signal to hsdpa.

I was in stanford a while back and best I got was hsdpa on CellC, lte was about 40min drive away.

Following - i am also shopping around for a good 2nd sim data only deal.

@AlexFl what handset are you using?

Rain is probably good for fixed data but for mobile data...I don't think so. I did a test for a week. I had signal at work (Sandton) and signal at home (Boksburg)...but not much signal in between when travelling.
I cancelled..

CellC signed that national roaming agreement with MTN to use 3G and LTE, so i'm sure cellc would be fine for this...?

I would suggest that if you want to make sure of ALWAYS having comms you are going to have to get ALL the various network operators SIMS
Get the basic monthly recurring prepaid option -- most operators have such an option -- in order to keep the SIM active
Many operators offer special single day cheap data -- which you can purchase online -- depending on which operator is giving you the best service / access

I would also suggest getting something apart from your phone in order to provide comms -- perhaps one of those small mobile LTE / WiFi routers -- one of the better LTE models
