Which is the most ideal 2TB hard drive?
Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive

Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EADS 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive

HITACHI Deskstar 7K2000 HDS722020ALA330 (0F10311) 2TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

All are roughly the same price, Not sure which one is most ideal, it mainly for storage in a Home Server.

I had 2 x 2 WD 20EADS models, both of them died within a week of buying them. It could just have been a bad batch, courier could've mishandled the package or it wasn't packed safely enough. Either way, 2 out of 2 dying in a week made me never trust those models. Replaced them with their 64mb cache brothers, the EARS models... More expensive, but 3 drives in and have had no issues.

Seagate is fast but not the most reliable anymore.

Never tried a Hitachi

Samsungs are very good.

Having said that though, it doesn't matter what drives you buy, it's just luck of the dice and how you treat them. The most bulletproof drives can break in a day, whilst some of the most unreliable drives like maxtors can last a lifetime

any one of those will work fine for you. I would also add Samsung to the list.

The biggest factor is not so much the make of the drive... but what you are going to use it for.

If you treat them nice... they should last you 3 to 5 years.

I have been running the 1tb and 1.5tb WD Caviar Green drives for quite a while now without any problems. Like most people say, it's luck of the draw most of the time. Stick to WD, Samsung, and Seagate (but not the 7200.11's) and you will be stacking the odds in your favor. It might be an idea to get a 1.5tb and a 1tb drive to make sure that a hard drive crash never means that you lose important data. Redundancy is king!

For absolute bang for your buck as well as reliability Samsung is the way to go.I saw a 1tb going for R799 the other day at Makro.2tb is not very far off probably priced at less than a grand.

What's wrong with the 7200.11s? I think I have one and it's lasted about a year now, and I've got an older 250GB seagate that's lasted 3 years

I can only have one drive, since my "server" motherboard only has 2 sata ports. It would have been ideal to go for 3 1TB but I cant, at the moment I Have a 500GB and a 1TB, with only 80Gb's free space, My solution was to replace the 500gb with a 2TB, however I've been searching for a decent 2TB, and it seems most of them have pretty high failure rates, I don't want to load up 2TB's of stuff and then have it die on me...
most of the data is not VERY important, and what is important has redundant backups on external drives online storage etc... But I don't want to have unnecessary trouble too...
Any suggestions if importing it is a good idea? i'm sure to save at least 20% on the price...

Take 2 has this seagate on special: Seagate Barracuda LP - 2TB HDD 32MB Cache - SATA 2 - 3.0Gb/s http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-...tb-hdd-32mb-cache-sata-2-3-0gb-s-4603166.html
I'm kinda leaning towards a samsung or Hitachi from what I've read so far. The seagates and WD's have too high failure rates
