Hello!
I am in some need of some advice, I'm currently looking for a decent 5.1 speaker system for music and movies, I'm seriously looking at getting a second hand set of Z-5500's or Z680's but am also looking at the Z906's however from what I've read they are mediocre at best.

My question is, for R4.5k what is the best system one can get? I'm open to anything in this price range that sounds good! :p

I've currently got a pair of X530's on my main desktop and I love them  is the Z906 any better?
I'll be using a Creative Sound Blaster that comes with the Asus Crosshair 3 formula, probably be using its optical output

Careful, my DSTV HDPVR (model before Explora (hD2 i think)) does not work nicely with that particular amp. Just a heads up

I took a look at it today, wasn't too impressed with it though but so far it seems to be the best option
Very good deal that, the amp is almost identical to the VSX-329. When you have some money you can upgrade the front speakers and cable. Pity the bundled disc player...

How much do some decent speakers go for? I found the system to be somewhat lacking in clarity

Depends on your definition of decent. I looked at some bookshelf speakers for my pc, the other day, for 3k/pair. That was the minimum quality I would settle for.

People have different requirements though.

I've been very impressed with the Samsung systems in that range.

For a bit more the Onkyo HTiB's are very good.

Any suggestions on the Onkyo and Samsung models?

If I were to go a bit over budget and get this what would be a good set of speakers to use with it?

EDIT I see there is a complete set for R6.5k

Not if you use it to your advantage. Leave it sealed in the box. Wait a month. Go back to Makro. Say you got it as a gift you don't really want. Take a store credit. Get something you want ;)

I have one of those still sealed in a box, never opened... with the extended warranty. I am willing to part with it for R5000.
I was on an impulsive streak and ended up with a Yamaha RX-A830.

I'd gladly take you up on that offer, I just get a bit nervous when purchasing electronics like this without meeting face to face and I'm situated in Joburg not Durban unfortunately

No problem with that, I'm relocating up that way in a couple of weeks. Should be up there by the 15th. Flying up next week to look at a few houses.

We can continue via pm if you are keen and can wait a bit.
