Best A.V receiver brand?

Its R7 900 on have2have, was hoping to get it cheaper in SA. Was looking at the Sony 2400 ES which was R5 500 which suddenly jumped to R 8 000.

I also agree with most of you guys on the Marantz, I've known them for years and they've always had a great rep , just don't know about the AV side.

Why do so many shops push the Yamaha tho?

Don't think you can really go wrong with a Yamaha. I've had a Yamaha, then got a Denon and back with Yamaha again.

Oh, Yamaha AV Receiver + Mission speakers = a match made in heaven. :)

But ultimately you must sit down in a sound room and find out what sounds sweetest to your ears.

They just seem overrated. What I'm trying to say is that there might be equally good or better brands at the same or cheaper prices. And also they come with too many bells and whistles that you pay for, but might not even use.

Just my opinion, might be wrong.
 
So something very strange happened last night when I was trying to sleep. I heard my speakers making some noise, then it stopped, then I slept further...When I woke up this morning, the Receiver (Yamaha RX-V475) standby light was off. When i pressed the power button on the Receiver itself (or any other button), the red standby light just flickers for a few seconds then switches off again. Anyone else experience this?

ive also got a yamaha system, flipping beautiful, only gripe is no HDMI, system is a lil old :o, but still perfect sound.

but in the end, you just hafto sit down and listen, same as test driving a car..

My main board blew on my 467 when we had a storm - I would take it to Yamaha to check out. BTW all other further actions worked except for the HDMI ports, feedback was that they had taken the hit on the HDMI connection between the amp and the ports; the evening was fine though...

And you had it replaced while still under warranty?

What happens if you out of warranty? just asking and wana know if insurance covers these types of things.
 
Was out of warranty and ended up paying about R1900 for the new board and labour - worked out cheaper than buying new, and it works perfectly again ;)

You can try insurance, I didn't bother with them due to my excess if R2000...
 
I think there was a power surge. Last week my Microwave died, and this week my receiver. But the funny thing is that the tv and computer was still on. If it was a surge, the computer would have probably stayed off as it is not set to restart once there is a power failure.

AND,

since it might be a surge, and power is continuous, nothing would happen to my PC cos I have this power supply that is well worth its money (Coolermaster SM-2 850w) with all that protection jargon like "OVP" and all that stuff. (I am using my PC as a case to study wtf happened because the receiver wont give me much info as to why the receiver was off, but the pc was on. And the Microwave reference is leading me on to believe that it's got to be a power surge.)

For anyone that wants to know:
I just spoke to my broker and she said that you need to have accidental/mechanical/electrical cover added to your insurance if you want them to help you out. You also need the necessary plugs in place to minimize the damages (power protection plugs) on computers and electrical items.
