Hi Guys,

Need some help. I am with Web Africa running on the 10gig package. Happy with the service other than for the slower speeds during the day. My usage is unfortunately high with some months exceeding 20 gigs.

Most of the downloading are legit software sites such as filehippo.com but I also download the odd video clip from newsgroups and torrents (can't say I have used a torrent client since joining Web Africa).

My problem is obviously price versus usage. I am looking for a host that offers a better price with slightly more allocation or more tolerant to p2p software.

Nothing wrong with webafrica but I am starting to see posts referring to options other than saix etc. Any help, advice or direction would be aprecciated.

I currently have the 1gig adsl package at Telkom but will probably downgrade my speed soon.

Thanks

Andre

What is your line speed? 4Mbit? Downgrading to 512kbps or 384kbps would be a start. Personally I think the extra R200 or so is worth the 4Mbit speeds.

Anyway. A way to save on the 20GB from WebAfrica is to get a TelkomInternet (TI) account which gives you 10GB local usage for every 1GB international bandwidth you buy. So a 3GB TI account will give you 3GB and 30GB local usage once you've reached your initial 3GB cap.

Then you could pay for a shell/server overseas (www.serve.co.za) for around R25 per month which gives you a certain amount of hard drive space and a certain amount of bandwidth (on a PC overseas where bandwidth is cheap). You download all your stuff to that box, then upload it to a local FTP, such as ftp.uunet.co.za/pub/incoming. After that, you use your local TI bandwidth to download the files to your personal/home/office PC.

You could save big bucks like that. I'm not an expert on it, but I'm sure there are people who could shed some more light for you.

damn fine answer

Thank you - your answer definitely covers a large part of the question - much appreciated
