Hello I want to hear what will be the best router to buy for online gaming.
I did take a look at the D-Link DGL4500 but they do not ship to South Africa so if you know of a similar product please post and let me know
Thank you

Having an awesome gigabit router with WiFi won't help you when you have a poor ADSL modem...

I think most of these gaming oriented equipment is just marketing gimmicks and not really things that makes any practical difference. You would really have to put a lot of effort + update the firmware regularly for it to be able to filter out games on layer 7 level from torrents.

Also take note that the DGL4500 is NOT an ADSL modem.

If you're looking for the best ADSL modem in terms of stability on 4Mbps+ connections, then look at the cheap D-Link DSL-2500U.

Let me tell you my problem i have a 1mb uncaped line and on my network i have a asus eee pad tablet, android phone,wd tv live hub and then my pc now all that are using the internet sometimes so i want a router that can cancel that trafic when im in a game

I have had numerous ADSL modem / routers over the past years, I use to love the old Netgear DG834GT models, but since the newer models are running on different chipsets, their performance / quality is not what it use to be...

Nowdays I am loving my linksys modems... bit expensive, and its now the cisco name you are paying for... but all in all, you get what you pay for at the end of the day. They are really reallly impressive. Never have to reboot the router, no wi-fi issues... no hassles whatsover.

I highly doubt that the D-Link DGL4500 would be able to do that. It might help a bit, but you'll still lagg if I had to take a good guess.

The only way that you're gonna have a lagg free game is if you limit the speed of the other IP addresses that aren't playing games so that they don't exceed more than like 384kbps download and 128kbps upload. The best thing would be to limit everything to that, and just exempt your game ports from those limits.

If that DGL-4500 is actually limiting the other traffic and if it has an up to date game port list & Layer 7 filter for games, then it should be able do the trick.

I would suggest that you first read up reviews on that router to make sure that it makes a sufficient difference in terms of gaming performance on 4Mbps or slower ADSL connections before you jump in and buy a product that was intended for like 10Mbps+ connections.

I haven't worked on enterprise networks, so I can't really tell how good QoS works, but from my home networking experience QoS newer made enough of a difference to even bother setting it up.

Rate limiting on a home network does make a huge difference though, and I'm ALWAYS setting it up if I have the time to do so.
