Please can you point me in the direction of the best and cheapest phone with GPS and support for Java MIDP.

Nokia: 2710 Navigation edition, 5230

Not sure on the pricing, but I'd say it's between the two Nokias, with the 2710 coming in at a bit less than the 5230.

Yip, 2710, but for 200 more you'll get hsdpa to boot on the 5230 at cna for r1500
