Best and worst hard drives

Mirrors my experience.

I've had THREE Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (ST3000DM001) failures - their highest failing drive.

I'm going to go back to HGST despite owning one of the original IBM 75GXP "Deathstars!"

I have RMA'd many of those... the ones they supplied as replacements are still going...
Eventually Rectron got tired of me.

Same here, but if you look at the cost of desktop-grade drives (such as the Seagtae ST4000DM000) vs the cost of "NAS / enterprise" drives, the TCO at least for my home-NAS pays off. Seagate has a 3 year warranty on the desktop drives where other manufacturers have only a 1 year warranty. From my 5-bay NAS I had 5 drives fail in two years (not at the same time, but as the first one popped, the others dropped the following months) and all of them RMA'd. Drives will fail and as long as you have a raided solution and hot-spares there is no risk.

Companies like Backblaze prefer to use desktop drives over enterprise grade as the cost burden is less and the risk of failure on those drives is small (compared to the reliability/cost of enterprise drives).
 
great stuff... just let me sit back and wait for my media server to fail lol... time for a proper backup!
 
I can't take this seriously. The sample size on most of these drives are too small.

All the drives with higher failure rates have higher samples sizes. Except the Seagate model with the bad firmware which is significantly higher.

Lol :D

I literally just had one of these disks die on me like 30 minutes ago. Also looks like one of the others in the raidz2 array is also on the way out. Picking up two new WD drives tomorrow morning :D
 
Arg and my latest backups are like 6 months old. Hope I don't lose more that 2 during the rebuild. Wish me luck.

We've got a UPS and generator. So touch wood.

Funny enough I went to check our other array and it also has a bad Seagate disk. Having a bad drive day, at least I have plenty of 1TB drives on hand.

Seems to mimic my experience. Another flaw I've discovered is the SATA port. It's not very tight fitting to say the least and when it disconnects the drive starts clicking. Will definitely not buy Seagate again.

I'm worried about my media server too. Using a Netgear NAS with a raid array but still I think I need some form of backup. Unfortunately media is just too bulky, going to be a challenge
