I've captured a 2 hour video tape to my PC. The resulting .mpg file is huge, almost 4GB.

My DVD player don't deal with .mpg very well, so I want to convert it to AVI with SUPER. What codec and settings would be best? Where do I download the codec from? I'd like the size to be no more than 1GB, quality don't need to be any higher than what I would get from a VCR and it must be free, of cause.

Also any suggestions for a free program to split or trim the avi file.

Any advice much appreciated.

List your DVD player make & model, does it support DivX?

Also what type of footage did you take?

Best codec is Xvid @ the moment all tvrips, dvdrips, music video rips etc. are being released in xvid format as opposed to divx ! xvid's also play on divx dvdplayers

I thought that H.264 codec was good?

MaTrOsKa!

it won't work on your Player, but the topic title is "Best AVI codec"

H.264 is very good but my DivX player doesn't even bother to display the .mp4 file in my menu.
XVid is the next best thing and AFAIK it works on most DivX players

Ok, thanks guys, selected xvid and left all default settings, worked great. You won't believe how much time I've spend just selecting random settings and converting. That's what happen if you don't know what you're doing.

xvid reduced my test file from 50Mb to 6Mb with no apparent loss of quality. Now my other question, do you know of any simple to use free software that will allow me to split or trim the xvid .AVI file.

As for my DVD player, its a Magnavox MDV436. So far it played all .AVI files I've threw at it, but .mpg files the time display is always 00:00 and for some .mpg files it only play the first few seconds and then return to the menu, so I try to avoid .mpg whenever I can.
